CAPITAL REGION Report: Urban centers still struggle with poverty BY JUSTIN MASON Gazette Reporter Reach Gazette reporter Justin Mason at 395-3113 or jmason@dailygazette.net.
Poverty rates among inner city populations in the Capital Region continue to dwarf those witnessed in their surrounding counties, according to a new study released by the New York State Community Action Association on Wednesday. The statewide report found that more than 2.6 million New Yorkers —including 852,000 children — are living in poverty. The state’s overall poverty rate was at 13.8 percent, a figure that is slightly higher than the national average of 13.2 percent. The report also found that nearly half of all families in poverty are headed by single women with children. The state’s impoverished population is disproportionately represented by minorities — nearly one in five blacks and one in four Latinos are listed as living in poverty. The report identifies the number of individuals living in households with incomes at or below the federal poverty line. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services lists those households with four members and annual income of $22,050 or less as being at or beneath the poverty line. In general, cities around the Capital Region registered the highest poverty rates. More than one in fi ve people in Albany, Schenectady and Troy are listed as living in poverty, according to the report. But these rates are not reflective of the poverty gauged in county populations. For instance, about 10 percent of Schenectady County’s population is considered at the poverty level, which is half the rate of poor identified within the city. ...................>>>>...........>>>.........http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01600&AppName=1

ALBANY-- More than 25 percent of people in Albany live in poverty, as do more than 20 percent of people living in Schenectady and Troy, according to a report released Wednesday by the New York State Community Action Association.
The 2010 New York State Poverty Report found that more than 2.6 million New Yorkers, including 852,000 children, live in poverty. The poverty level for a family of three is federally defined as a household earning less than $18,310 a year. About 50 percent of all families living in poverty statewide are headed by single women with children. Those numbers track even higher locally, with 69 percent in Albany, 61 percent in Schenectady and 70 percent in Troy of families living in poverty headed by single women with children.
The statistics are particularly distressing for children. Roughly one-third of all children in Albany, Schenectady and Troy live in poverty, compared with 42 percent of children in Buffalo, the state's highest level.............>>>>...........>>>>............Read more: http://www.timesunion.com/AspS.....ECTADY#ixzz0icWRSl5H

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."
The gazette is the "official" newspaper for the City and County of Schenectady. They don't want to curry disfavor with the political bosses of the time.
GrahamBonnet had it correct. The gazette works together with the cheer leaders.

I agree, but even when Rep's are in power, they're still siding with the Dems. I thought Justin had more skill in reporting, unbiasedly, than he does. Obviously, I was mistaken. But then again, everyone's gotta do what they need to to keep their jobs today I guess. I actually feel sorry for him.
