NY residents can sign up for free sex offender alert system

    New York has joined several other states in providing free alerts by e-mail, text message, phone and fax when a sex offender changes address.
    Similar systems are offered by Florida, Georgia, Utah and North Carolina and nationwide through private contractors, sometimes for a fee. At least one nonprofit group in New York offers a similar service, Parents for Megan’s Law.
    New Yorkers can sign up to be notified whenever the most serious convicted sex offenders report changes of address to police as required by state law.
    In 2009, the state processed nearly 31,000 address changes and averaged 170 new offenders added to the sex offender registry each month, according to the state Division of Criminal Justice Services.
    The system announced Monday was created in a law passed last year. Senate sponsor Jeffrey Klein, a Democrat representing the Bronx and Westchester, said the online alerts will provide quicker notifi cation about address changes to residents, who would otherwise have to spend time searching the state’s sex-offender database.
