If they can propose housing over Alco's waste site-they can propose a school in an industrial park. Since no business would move to this overtaxed socialistic County-they must think "outside of the box".
Autism is believed by some to be the results of certain plastics, chemicals or vaccines. I do hope that these parents do their homework and make sure that there are air quality tests, water tests and soil tests BEFORE they make this move.
Remember, this was a WWII storage facility! This is an INDUSTRIAL facility!

it's also mixed with school taxes too......

Crossroads opens larger facility ROTTERDAM — Crossroads Center for Children held a ribbon cutting ceremony Tuesday to celebrate the opening of its new facility. The school for youth age 18 months to 12 years diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders is now housed at 1150 North Westcott Road. The facility provides speech, occupational and physical therapy, psychology, and parent and sibling support. Its goal is to enhance all children’s lives by teaching them home, school and community skills. The center has a staff of 50 and serves 55 children; it can serve another 35 with the additional space. The school was formerly housed at Hostetter Administrative Building in Glenville, a former elementary school. A water main break forced closing of the facility and its temporary relocation to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Glenville with separate offices on Lakehill Road in Burnt Hills. School officials have signed a 12-year lease. “It was very important to us to stay in Schenectady County,” said Executive Director Kelly Young in a press release. “We serve more than 30 different school districts, so a central location for the convenience of all our parents and schools is key.”
I think that we should welcome any business or non-profit organization that wishes to set up shop in our fair town. (as long as they are law abiding and not some nefarious group) I bid a warm welcome to the new center on Wescott Rd.

There are many good non-profits .. such as churches .. that help improve the quality of community life.
As an attendee of a church in the city -- I can say that the city is a better place because of the existence of that "non-profit".
What do you have against a school for autistic children?

I have a problem with organizations like Proctors that has sucked the life out of the taxpayer year after year. I don't have a problem with the building on Westcott Rd or any churches just the organizations that should be for profit and aren't.
Proctors has been a big part of downtown Schenectady's revitalization .. although, I do admit that downtown now needs some retail businesses, offices, and residential units to add proper balance. The City of Schenectady should have followed the City of Saratoga Spring's example and required that all new development include - 1st floor retail, 2nd floor - office, and 3rd and higher floor residential. It is only by bringing such a mix of uses that you bring the necessary "critical mass" back to a downtown to allow it to flourish.

Proctors has not lived up to what was promised to the taxpayers of this city/county. It has not been the catalyst that will bring stable business to the down town arena. Have you taken a ride around Mt Pleasant, Van Vranken, and Hamilton Hill and looked at the empty houses that nobody will buy because of the high taxes needed to support the likes of Proctors.
Proctors has helped downtown. The neighborhoods in Schenectady are in trouble for a other reasons. First, the worst neighborhoods in the city are virtually ignored by the city government. I applaud Joe Allen for his efforts to keep Hamilton Hill from sinking even faster .. but sadly .. he is often the lone voice on the City Council fighting for his neighborhood.
I attend church in Mont Pleasant and was active in its neighborhood association for a number of years. Because Mont Pleasant does not have a voice on the City Council .. it is ignored. I remember vividly when Upper Union Street got almost $1 million of federal funds to build a brick circle at the intersection of Union Street and the side street that McDonald's is on ... the same time we (in Mont Pleasant) fought tooth and nail to keep a measly $180,000 grant to improve Crane St sidewalks ... we won .. but only after fighting to keep our very modest grant from being taken and given to one of the neighborhoods on Schenectady's "more politically connected" east side.

all well and good but sadly we revolve around a thing called a car - such projects will aways fail because of lack of secure parking
we are often fooled by our friends overseas because they have solved the car problem the ares under main roadways are underground parking garages - light rail actually goes somewhere passenger rail terminates at centers of major cities, large airports and connects to light rail
Talking to each other is better than talking about each other
No proctors has not helped downtown. proctors exists ONLY by the graces of the taxpayers. It's the taxpayers that helped proctors.
Why don't you go down to the dss building and ask them how CATS and MISS SIGON was? Ask them how proctors is working out for them.
Then go to the unemployment line and ask those folks how TIM CONWAY'S show was. Ask them how proctors is working out for them.
While you're at it, ask the guy pi$$ing on the sidewalk and the guy puking at the bus stop how proctors is helping them.
It is a taxpayer's money pit that can not sustain itself. It is the taxpayers that is making morris' ARTS DREAM come true. The ONLY time the eateries see a substantial rise in revenues is when we, the taxpayers, pay for proctors to put on a show.
It is nothing more than a false sense of economic security!!!
