ROTTERDAM Rotterdam Square Cinema upgrades to 3-D BY JUSTIN MASON Gazette Reporter Reach Gazette reporter Justin Mason at 395-3113 or jmason@dailygazette.net.
Watching movies just got a bit more comfortable at the Rotterdam Square mall. Zurich Cinemas is putting the finishing touches on a major renovation of the mall’s theater complex aimed at bringing the movie experience to a new level. In addition to adding a new theater, the Syracuse area company has created two 3-D digital projection movie screens, updated to a digital sound system and installed plush stadium seating in its existing space. Owner Conrad Zurich said his company decided to invest more than $500,000 into modernizing the theaters after signing a long-term contract with the mall last spring. He said the goal of the renovation was to take a theater complex that was largely unchanged since the mall’s construction during the 1980s and bring it into the future. “The theater was lovely, but needed upgrades,” he said. “We made it a theater of the next decade instead of a theater of the last decade.” The theater is among only a handful in the greater Capital Region to offer films in digital 3-D. Zurich said the 3-D screens create a viewing experience that is unparalleled for such popular films as James Cameron’s “Avatar.” ............................>>>>.............>>>>.................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01501&AppName=1

Finally some improvements to RSM and these theaters. Now we don't have to overpay Downtown and worry about parking. Maybe this will generate more foot traffic and fill vacant stores? |

I guess, would be nice. I think they need a Clifton Country Mall style makeover myself. These small malls work better with all outside stores.. |

The problems with RSM are many.. 1. Two economy/mid range stores as anchors..lets face it, Kmart is a dump, and Sears is way too small. 2. no second floor and the lack of a circuit-style store layout. Although not as bad as the original CCM, the star configuration for store layout doesn't work. 3. Cold- feeling mall..ice cold when compared to CC and Crossgates. 4. No "gotta go to stores" CC has LL Bean, Crossgates has Best buy and the upper-range Culinary stores. 5. and probably the biggest problem was with its initial design...that stupid water cannon (I mean fountain) right in the middle of the place. I witnessed it at full bore when the mall first opened...my ears were ringing when I went outside to my car.
I think to survive, RSM has to become unique...I don't think a simple Mohawk Commons copy will do. |

Rotterdam mall is just what it says.....ROTTERDAM! Only people who live in rotterdam or the 'city' shop there. More out of convenience than anything else. No one comes to rotterdam to shop. Most folks go to Colonie, Crossgates or Mohawk commons.
Realistically...the biggest draw in rotterdam is WALMART!!! That is a convenience for rotterdam residents but is a magnet for the city folks. I predict the rotterdam mall will be a vacant mall within the next couple of years with graffiti all over it. |

So this story about the theater was more important to cover than this last board meeting. Classic Gazette reporting.

How about a Walmart Supercenter at the RSM? West end of town needs a market and BT is right. The mall will be vacant before long. |

Quoted from huskyhowls: How about a Walmart Supercenter at the RSM?
HH, There is already an undesireable segment of society that "hangs out" at RSM, particularly the unsupervised youth on Friday nights. Bringing a Walmart Supercenter to that location will increase the presence of that element and that of the Rotterdam PD. On the topic being discussed, I'm glad to hear of the 3-D movies at the cinema. I will consider watching movies there rather than at Colonie Center and Crossgates. Do they have a Senior Citizen discount? |
