Pediatricians Want Redesign of Hot Dogs, Candy to Curb Kids' Choking

MONDAY, Feb. 22 (HealthDay News) -- The leading group of pediatricians in the United States is pushing for a redesign of common foods such as hot dogs and candies, along with new warning labels placed on food packaging, to help curb sometimes fatal incidents of child choking.
"We know what shape, sizes and consistencies pose the greatest risk for choking in children and whenever possible food manufacturers should design foods to avoid those characteristics, or redesign existing foods when possible, to change those characteristics to reduce the choking risk," said Dr. Gary Smith, immediate-past chairman of the American Academy of Pediatrics' Committee on Injury, Violence and Poison Prevention and lead author of the organization's new policy statement on preventing choking.
"Any food that has a cylindrical or round shape poses a risk," he pointed out.      Nobody has called for a Schenectady County only hot dog yet? How about starting with the hot dog vendor outside packed DSS?

Lawsuits. lawsuits, government laws, PHYSICIAN GROUPS, helicopter parents...more and more. I can't take it. Put the damn kids in a bullet proof moon suit, give them non-fat government approved protein shakes and strap them into their kevlar chairs in germ free environments. Put two teacher's aides and a micro chip on them and this will assure that while their loser, pothead parents aren't paying attention, the taxpayers can pay to keep them safe, 24-7. Better yet, just mummify and jar them all immediately upon birth and they will be assured never to get hurt, injure themselves, cause trouble, experience fear, or that most terrible thing -risk- and will always be forever young and perfect.

Before they mandate that a warning about choking hazards be printed on the packaging, perhaps the government should
require that the ingrediants are thoroughly identified.  The ingrediants warning could completely eliminate the need for the
warning about choking. (tic)  

Our elected officials have lost sight of the role of government that was envisioned by our nation's founders and of the limited
constitutional powers of government.  And, our medical practitioners are acting as if they are (already) employed in the public
sector.

Totally agree GB.  It's getting, maybe even past, ridiculous.
