At its meeting held on December 16, 2009, the State Fire Prevention and Building Code Council determined that adopting this rule on an emergency basis  was required in order to comply with legislation, Amanda’s Law, which will go into effect on February 22, 2010, and to preserve public safety by clarifying requirements for Carbon Monoxide Alarms.

This rule has been adopted as an emergency rule, effective as of February 22, 2010 – the text is below.  The following link provides background on the legislation, Amanda’s Law: Available here.

Was anyone aware of this?  I found NO mention of it in the Times Union or NY Post website ... which is strange because it's a new law that affects every homeowner, single or multi-family, starting TOMORROW!

RR313.4.2 Power source. The required carbon monoxide alarms shall receive their primary power from the building wiring when such wiring is served from a commercial source or an on-site electrical power system, and when primary power is interrupted, shall receive power from a battery. Wiring shall be permanent and without a disconnecting switch other than those required for overcurrent protection.

The law however states nothing about a fine or penalty for non-compliance.

All I knew is that if you sell your home or buy one, it has to have a carbon monoxide detector.

I understand the need to memorialize folks.....but really,,,,although I have CO2 detectors in my home,,,,it is getting ridiculous......WE THE PEOPLE have become permanent mourners with the help of our
elected officials.....never mind about their REAL jobs.....they just like to keep us scrambling about amongst ourselves getting our itchy ears tickled never looking up to see what they are actually doing.....

Except if something harmful happens due to carbon monoxide now, it's not the responsibility of the insurance company if you do not comply.

I don't spell check!  Sorry...
If you include "No offense" in a statement, chances are, your statement is offensive.

is your home......are they safer with CO2 detectors----OF COURSE....do we need the government to 'make it a law'????
is it their business?.....or shall we be responsible for ourselves again?

I always thought the units had electric heat in there. At least that's what my friends at the senior center tell me

Maybe soon everyone will get a free gas mask or moon suit too, to wear as a protective measure against any unforeseen tragic happenings. We can put the seniors and the kids in them, and the middle aged, and the teens, and the late teens, and the tweens, and the twenty-somethings and the mature...and everyone can live in a hurricane proof, earthquake, filtered-air, bomb proof, flood proof, fire proof, ultra safe RISK FREE BUNKER (at government expense of course) AND NO ONE WILL EVER BE HURT, MAIMED, INJURED and/or have the trauma of knowing they MAY be any of the above! END RISK NOW!

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."
