Witnesses: "Racist" cops screamed at murder victim's family Comments 0 | Recommend 0 February 22, 2010 6:23 PM Steve Flamisch
Two Schenectady police officers blasted the city's Guyanese population in a profanity-laced tirade against a murder victim's relatives, family members and witnesses told CBS 6.
Karmat Ally and four other people -- including the family's priest -- went to city police headquarters on Sunday night to report information about the killing of his son-in-law, Ganesh Ramgoolam, Ally said.
The group did not realize that two Schenectady police officers had been shot less than an hour earlier while executing a search warrant related to the murder, and that the detective handling the homicide case had been dispatched to the scene. Neither officer was seriously injured.
"[The officer at the desk] said... 'He doesn't want to see you, and he's not here because you Guyanese shot two of our cops," Ally said. "The sergeant was there. The sergeant just [got] up from his chair and said, 'You guys, get the 'F' out of here.' And he was screaming."
A Daily Gazette reporter who witnessed the incident confirmed that both officers yelled at the group to leave, seemingly without provocation. She said, "It was definitely a racist situation."
Schenectady Police Sgt. Eric Clifford said Monday that he did not know the identity of the officers. He said an internal investigation was underway.
"At this point, I don't know if it happened," Clifford said. "I'm not saying it didn't. There's no defense to it if it did."
In another development, Ramgoolam's widow accused the police department of insensitivity during her anguished quest to learn the fate of her husband.
Uneesa Ally, 25, said the officers on the scene provided no information about whether Ramgoolam was alive or dead. Ally said she was directed to Ellis Hospital, then to Albany Medical Center, and finally back to the scene over the course of an excruciating hour-and-a-half.
Finally, she learned that her husband was dead.
Sgt. Clifford explained that Ally was not permitted to view her husband's body because officers wanted to protect potential evidence at the crime scene. He said he did not know why she was not informed of the death in a more timely fashion.
By Monday night, no arrests had been made in the murder investigation though police did charge Adrian Parbhudial, 24, with a single count of attempted murder in the first degree in connection with the shooting of the two police officers. Neither Patrolman Jeremy Pace nor Patrolman Thomas Kelly was seriously injured.
Police said the two shootings were related, but declined to say whether Parbhudial was a suspect in the murder.
I saw this on the news tonight. When will these cops learn? If I ever did that at my 'private sector' job....I'd be outta there!!

This situation with the SPD is getting to an explosive point. Something needs to be done, SOON.
I hear there's calls to disband? I wonder if that's possible. Certainly, there needs to be different supervision, training and perhaps officers.
I think they should disband the entire force!
