Tax exemption for seniors changes

    SCHENECTADY — The senior citizen tax exemption for Schenectady County property taxes has changed.
    The change allows low-income Schenectady County residents who turn 65 after March 1 and before Dec. 31 to receive the tax exemption for the 2011 tax year. It replaces a requirement that residents had to turn 65 before March 1 to qualify for the exemption.
    The exemption ranges from between 5 percent and 50 percent and applies only to county taxes. It is available to senior citizens with an annual income of $37,400 and less.
    Residents who will turn 65 this year must file for the exemption by March 1. Applications and additional information can be obtained at the city assessor’s office or at the local town assessor’s office.
