New rules for paint contractors require federal safety training

    Some contractors and property owners will face fines if they disturb lead paint on a job without first receiving a new federal certification.
    The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Renovation, Repair & Painting Rule takes effect April 22 and requires certifi ed contractors give residents a lead safety brochure before starting a project.
    Local agencies, including Cornell Cooperative Extension in Albany County and Schenectady County Public Health, are providing training free of charge, with sessions scheduled for March in Albany and April in Schenectady.

    The effort to prevent lead contamination focuses on homes, child care facilities and schools that were built before 1978, when the use of lead paint was banned in the U.S., according to program materials.
