Giannoulias, Kirk win Senate nods
By: David Catanese and Josh Kraushaar
February 3, 2010 12:45 AM EST

Light turnout Tuesday in Illinois marked the chaotic finish to the first-in-the-nation primary, which determined the Democratic and Republican Senate nominees for President Barack Obama's former Senate seat but left the nomination for governor undecided.

While voters selected Democratic state Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias and GOP Rep. Mark Kirk as Senate standard-bearers, a little-known downstate GOP state senator and a bruised Democratic incumbent governor clung to slim but uncertain leads early Wednesday morning.

With 98 percent of precincts reporting, Republican state Sen. Bill Brady led state Sen. Kirk Dillard by less than a percentage point. On the Democratic side, Gov. Pat Quinn had barely more breathing room, holding onto a 5,200-vote margin over state Comptroller Dan Hynes, 50.3 percent to 49.7 percent.

The Democratic contest turned out as close as it was vicious — and despite his deficit, Hynes conceded nothing before a crowd of supporters around midnight in Chicago.

"Tonight we've learned one thing for sure, and that is we're going to continue fighting," Hynes said to rousing cheers. ...........................>>>>...................>>>>................http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0210/32442.html

Democratic Illinois Lt. Gov. Nominee Arrested for Domestic Battery

Posted by James Richardson (Profile)

Thursday, February 4th at 11:00AM EST

What Chicago election is complete without elements of domestic violence, prostitution and tax evasion?

A Chicago pawnbroker who financed his campaign with nearly $2 million of his own wealth, Scott Lee Cohen Tuesday won the Democratic Party’s nomination for Lieutenant Governor. But with new details of Cohen’s sordid past emerging today, Democratic primary voters will soon be wishing they had given his five rivals a second look.

Cohen allegedly held a knife to his then-girlfriend’s neck in October 2005. Charges were later dropped after the woman, once convicted of prostitution, failed to appear in court to testify against Cohen.

A police report of obtained by the Chicago Sun Times said the woman had scaring and defensive wounds on her hands “from trying to defend herself against the arrestee swinging the knife at her.” Additionally, Cohen “pushed [the] complainant’s head against [a] wall, causing a bump on the back of her head.”

The arrest came only months after Cohen’s former wife filed for divorce and was awarded by the courts a temporary protection order. Cohen’s deep bench of troubles don’t stop at reports of domestic violence, as records also indicate also he had federal tax problems.

Cohen disclosed his domestic battery arrest at the outset of his campaign, but details of the episode–namely, that he wielded a knife against his live-in prostitute girlfriend–surfaced only after voters had gone to the polls.

Pat Quinn, who leads in the count for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination and succeeded disgorged former Governor Rod Blagojevich last January, is keeping quiet on the matter.

At a post-election presser, Quinn fielded questions on his likely running mate, but said he was unaware of the details of his 2005 arrest.........................>>>>.............................>>>>...............http://www.redstate.com/jricha.....or-domestic-battery/

Dem Nominee for Illinois Lt. Governor Drops Out Amid Furor

It has become widely known that Scott Lee Cohen was accused of abusing his ex-wife and holding a knife to the throat of an ex-girlfriend.

CHICAGO -- The Democratic nominee for Illinois' lieutenant governor dropped out of the race Sunday night, less than a week after winning the nomination, amid a political uproar about his past.

Announcing his decision at a Chicago bar packed with patrons watching the Super Bowl, a tearful Scott Lee Cohen said the Democrats were not certain they could win with him on the ticket. He said he was stepping down because he did not want to jeopardize the Democratic Party ticket.

"This is the hardest thing that I ever had to do in my life," he said before choking up with sobs.

Since Cohen won the Democratic nomination on Tuesday, it has become widely known that he was accused of abusing his ex-wife and holding a knife to the throat of an ex-girlfriend -- a woman who was herself charged with prostitution. He also admits using steroids in the past.................>>>>....................>>>>...........................................http://www.foxnews.com/politic.....ace/?test=latestnews

Come on ally....show a little compassion here. How do you know that he may have been this real loving, loyal man, who got screwed over by these women? Perhaps he was just set up. Perhaps it was just a time when anger just got the best of him. I mean it happens to all of us at one time or another...right? Look a little closer....I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard for you to make a 'victim' out of him! You appear to have the ability to do it when it suits your favor.

Yeah you're right.  How would that suit my favor.  I think you Bumble, are a victim, OF YOUR OWN STUPIDITY.  This guy is a jerk.  All I said he should get out of poltics--I didn't say he needed the death penalty.  Have you a problem with anger Bumble?  That why you are so understanding of this slug.  Maybe you and Cohen could get joint sessions.

come on alley....he made an honest mistake...probably out of loyalty and compassion. How can you be so judgmental when you haven't even heard the other side of the story?

Perhaps 'everyone' that breaks the law or makes a 'mistake' while in office should get out of politics. Perhaps? Or should we give the 'chosen few' a pass?
