City to comedian: ‘Drop in’Colbert’s quip knocking Sch’dy draws invitations
BY MICHAEL LAMENDOLA Gazette Reporter

Satirist Stephen Colbert poked fun at Schenectady Monday night on his TV show, saying the best way to visit the area was through Google Maps.
Colbert was interviewing former Tennessee Rep. Harold Ford Jr., who is considering a campaign for U.S. Senate in New York. His quip came in response to Ford’s earlier statement that his only visit to Staten Island came when he “landed there in a helicopter.”
Said Colbert: “Are there other places in New York that you designate as ‘helicopter only?’ Because I would recommend that for Schenectady. I would just look at that on Google Maps.”
Colbert’s publicist was not available for comment.
Chamber of Schenectady County President Charles Steiner, who occasionally watches “The Colbert Report” on Comedy Central network, encouraged Colbert to visit Schenectady by helicopter.
“He will see a lot of growth and opportunity and he is going to want to land his apparatus here,” Steiner said. “We would welcome him to fly overhead, and when he does stop by we will be there to welcome him.”
Steiner said the chamber did not receive any feedback in the wake of Colbert’s quip. “I got a lot of more reaction when people saw [U.S. Rep. Paul] Tonko at the State of the Union address with the president and when ‘Saturday Night Live’ ran the footage as part of a skit,” he said. ..........>>>>...............>>>>................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r00102&AppName=1

I want a pair of glasses like Steiner has so I could see a rose colored Schenectady with all it's growth and opportunity because I'm just not seeing it.

Does Michael Lamendola live in Schenectady? I think they just had too much bare space on their front page.

Growth? Highest unemployment rates in the Capital District. Opportunity? Yeah in the bloated public sector.
Now even the lefty comedians are making with the Schenectady jokes.

Both Steiner (who can't even run the Christmas Parade) and Salengo(of the job destroying DSIC)should have been canned a long time ago.

Chamber wants Colbert to make fact-finding trip Officials see dig as tourism opportunity
BY MICHAEL LAMENDOLA Gazette Reporter

Stephen Colbert, if you are reading this, Schenectady forgives you. A week after Colbert poked fun at Schenectady on his Comedy Central TV show, local tourism officials are hoping to turn the slight into a positive sound bite for the area.
They have put together a peace offering — a basket of gifts — to be delivered by Chris Hunter, director of archives and collections for the Schenectady Museum & Suits-Bueche Planetarium.
Hunter will attend Tuesday’s “Colbert Report” show in New York City with his brother, Michael, and is hoping to present the gift basket to Colbert directly or to a member of his staff. Hunter scored the sought-after Colbert tickets in December as a Christmas present for his brother. The waiting list for the free tickets stretches into months, he said.
The basket contains a free roundtrip airplane ticket, donated by Richmor Aviation of Schenectady, for Colbert and five of his entourage to visit Schenectady; a picture of Colbert’s hero, Ronald Reagan, taken when he visited Schenectady in 1954 as a spokesman for General Electric; a photo of the fi rst TV drama ever produced in the United States, at WRGB, birthplace of television; and several other items. ................>>>>...........>>>>.............http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r00102&AppName=1

Colbert's joke as old as vaudeville

By MARV CERMAK COVERING SCHENECTADY
First published in print: Tuesday, February 9, 2010

A handful of community rah rahs got bent out of shape because comedian Stephen Colbert said the only way to visit Schenectady is by Google map.

You would have to have an IQ of about 30 or be chief cheerleader of an "I Love Schenectady Club" to not readily admit the city has failed dramatically in recent times.
However, other states' urban centers are as bad or worse than Schenectady when it comes to deteriorated neighborhoods, stagnant downtowns, crime and regiments of working poor.

Schenectady has been the butt of national jokes forever. Back in vaudeville days, road show members used to say, "A laugh in Schenectady means a hit on Broadway.''

David Letterman recently referred to the plane that overshot the Minneapolis Airport by a half-hour. He asked members of the audience who arrived by air to hold up their hands.

"Was New York City your destination or were you supposed to arrive in Schenectady?" Letterman quipped.

Joe Scarborough, host of Morning Joe on MSBC, also takes pokes at Schenectady. (Incidentally, when that show replaced fallen Don Imus, I immediately wrote an item predicting it would be a big success. The show's ratings are awesome.)

When it comes to comedians, I would really enjoy being in the audience for shows by Letterman, Craig Ferguson, Jay Leno and Jimmy Fallon.

As for Stephen Colbert, instead of watching his show, I'd rather spend the time visiting Google maps............>>>>...........>>>>..............Read more: http://www.timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyID=898532&category=MCERMAK#ixzz0f2logMI1

Sounds like MARV CERMAK can't take a joke.  Colbert is one funny man.  I'd rather watch Colbert then read his articles.

I don't spell check!  Sorry...
If you include "No offense" in a statement, chances are, your statement is offensive.

Cermak is off, here. It was just that - a joke.  Not only that, but if you've seen the back-and-forth with other cities Colbert has ribbed, you'll see that it is a great draw of attention.

Cermak's 'stream of consciousness' seem a little vaudeville for me! haha

Colbert's joke was right on. Even funnier is the faked outrage by Metrograft, the DSIC and museum hacks. Cermak has been saying the same thing as Colbert but has a much smaller audience.

With all the "renaissance" hot air- Schenectady County has lost thousands of jobs and now leads the area in unemployment and dysfunctional government. Both the County and City face record deficits with no elected business expertise to offer private sector solutions. Expect more raah-raah with increases in every tax and fee.

Quote of the year from Marv Cermak TU "You would have to have an IQ of about 30 or be the chief cheerleader of the 'I Love Schenectady Club' to not readily admit the city has failed dramatically in recent times."

Or be both and work for Metrograft, the Museum or DSIC?
