Gates Backs Repeal of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell'

Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Tuesday that he supports President Obama's decision to seek the repeal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy prohibiting gays from serving openly in the military and has appointed a "high-level working group" to figure out how to do it.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Tuesday that he supports President Obama's decision to seek the repeal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy prohibiting gays from serving openly in the military and has appointed a "high-level working group" to figure out how to do it.

Gates, in testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee, announced that Gen. Carter Ham, who leads U.S. Army forces in Europe, and Pentagon General Counsel Jeh Johnson will lead the review. The defense chief called for an "implementation plan" by the end of the year.

"I fully support the president's decision," Gates said. "The question before us is not whether the military prepares to make this change, but how we ... best prepare for it. We have received our orders from the commander in chief and we are moving out accordingly."

Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, echoed Gates' remarks and added that, in his "personal view," changing the policy is the "right thing to do." ...............>>>>.................>>>>..............http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/02/02/gates-backs-repeal-dont-ask-dont-tell/

And then there'll be gay marriages in the marines, divorces, custody battles, alimony, etc etc etc.

I don't have a problem with gay people, I have many friends that choose that lifestyle, and so do you - believe it or not. But, don't push it in my bedroom and don't make me pay for it via benefits thru the VA, etc.

Sorry, DADT was probably the best thing in the military.

As well as accusations of discrimination for promotions, and accusations of singling out gay soldiers during PT for making them do extra reps.  Now everybody that claim he/she is gay will receive special treatment in fear of accusation of discrimination and being labeled a homophobe.

I am not for changing the policy.  I also am not against gay people at all.  I can see why they want the policy changed I just don't see how it makes our military a better institution.

I am very torn with this subject.  I think gay people should be able to marry and have all the privliges that go along with it.  But I can also see a lot of people in the military taking advantage of gay marriage should it come about.  And believe me as soon as the DADT policy goes away it will open the flood gates.  Married soldiers make almost twice as much as a single soldier.  Tell me that wont influence a lot of young people to falsely say they are gay.  I truely hope they put some extra thought into this.

I think that the DADT policy in the military should remain. There will be discrimination suits filed daily. A distraction our military does not need now or in the future. Military personnel, I always believed, joined the military, focused and ready to fight in battle on a dime. They surely didn't join to play footsies with their significant other. I'd have to believe that 'romance and flowers' aren't their major priority. Homosexual or heterosexual!

Joining the military is not like going off to a relaxing resort in the Bahamas. It comes with major responsibilities and major life or death decision making. The last thing these boys in uniform need is to worry about being politically correct and worry about discrimination suits when they are placing their young lives on the line for ME and YOU!

Join...put your time in....come home....and be gay!!!

Sorry you feel that homosexuals will be a liability.  However, black folks are allowed to serve in the military.  Would you like to ban them also to prevent discrimination lawsuits?  If everyone in the military were white, then it would be a non-issue?  Heil Bumble!

Wow.  Nice use of the race card to muddy up the waters of a completely different subject.  Do you truely believe this is the same thing?  Color of skin compared to sexual preference?  In the military we seperate men and women.  Where they shower and live.  We don't seperate by skin color.  But please continue with your train of thought.  I am listening

You're right, we don't...but should we?  According to Bumble, the gov't needs to be cognizant of the potential for "discrimination lawsuits."  If a PL makes a black soldier do more push-ups than a white soldier, then that opens up the potential for "discrimination lawsuits," right?

I'm asking if bumblethru thinks we should keep blacks out of the military.  You too, Giantsfan.

We already don't keep gay people out of the military.  We just ask that they keep their sexual preference to themselves.  My worry with all of this has more to do with the fact it will give some soldiers another way to take advantage of the systems in place.  Some very specific guidlines need to be put into place before changing the DADT policy.  I don't believe our military is there yet.

I don't know if you have served in the military but if you did you would know it is way different then the civilian sector.

And why are you specifically using blacks in your scenerio?  Why not Jews or Hispanics or Muslims?  I'll tell you why.  Because you want the shock factor.  You already know no one in their right mind is going to say "blacks shouldn't be in the Army"  I believe everyone should have to serve at least 2 years in the military for some perspective.  But that would be too socialist and infringe on peoples freedom of choice.
