SCHENECTADY -- County Legislature Chairwoman Susan Savage wants Schenectady County to join other counties in New York state that require chain restaurants to list calories on menus.
Albany, Nassau, Suffolk, Ulster and Westchester counties and New York City already require such postings, which give calorie counts on menu boards and inside printed menus at fast-food restaurants and other chain establishments. "Items that might seem to be similar products actually can be vastly different," Savage, a Democrat, said at a press conference held this morning about the proposed legislation. "If you knew the hamburger you were thinking of ordering had more than 1,100 calories, you might make a different choice.................>>>>...................>>>>...................Read more: http://www.timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyID=895469#ixzz0eF6Y8rO3
Isn't this the job of our public schools? to edumacate the next generation about processed foods/additives etc....so we elect law-makers for what???? So they can feel good????
what a damn shame and waste of time........
...you are a product of your environment, your environment is a product of your priorities, your priorities are a product of you......
The replacement of morality and conscience with law produces a deadly paradox.

CAPITAL REGION County votes to post calories Chain eateries must include info on menus BY MICHAEL LAMENDOLA Gazette Reporter
Reinforcements from various fronts are pouring into the battle against the bulge. The Schenectady County Legislature and Community Care Physicians are the latest to join the fight. The state is also trying to combat obesity as well. The county Legislature Tuesday night voted 12-2 to adopt a local law that will require chain restaurants to include calorie counts on their menus. Chairwoman Susan Savage, DNiskayuna, said the law, which she sponsored, will help consumers make healthier choices about the foods they eat. The law, which will take effect in about a month, will apply to restaurants that have 15 or more locations nationwide, such as Dunkin’ Donuts, Mc-Donald’s and other large chains. It exempts local mom-and-pop restaurants, convenience store outlets, like Stewart’s Shops, and supermarkets. Schenectady’s law is similar to laws in effect in dozens of counties and cities across the United States. The federal government is also discussing establishing menu labeling standards, and first lady Michelle Obama is bringing attention to the issue through her “Let’s Move” campaign to curb childhood obesity. Dr. Swatantra Mitta, a pediatrician with Community Care Physicians, a multispecialty medical group in the Capital Region, supports the legislation. ...............>>>>..................>>>>........http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r00903&AppName=1
Next step force the removal of all high calorie foods. Government is taking away our freedom of choice and Savage is right in the middle of it. They tell how to eat what to eat and even what type of engergy saving toilet we use.
At the meeting last night, somwonw said that there were 2 legislators who run restaurants. I know Mr. Petta has a restaurant. Does anyone know who the other one is?
I notice that the legislation is for 'chain restaurants to list calories on menus ' . I have no problem with this. They easily can do this. Its on the spot info- This not a ball-buster. Its providing nutritional information to the consumer- it has nothing to do with government control .

This is an unjust law. If SS was truly concerned about providing nutritional information to the consumer, wouldn't it require ALL restaurants to comply with this law? This is another example of our legislators giving business another reason NOT to open up shop in Schenectady County. Ahh,,we don't need the business anyways. Aren't we just a business friendly County?
They first came after the restaurants with 15 or more locations, and I was silent because I wasn't one of "them.". Then they came after the bakeries with 4 of more locations, and I was afraid to speak up but didn't worry because they were the "rich" operators. Then they came after the small cafe with one location, and that was mine. And who will speak up for me? We can all be driven out of business together, how is that for working "together."
"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."
Somebody was there last night stating this didn't go far enough, that they wanted it to also include bakeries such as when you go to a grocery store. If they just take the "fast food" words out and replace it with any food sales location, that would take care of that. Of course, I bet there would be a voice from Neil Golub that would make sure something like that would never happen. I will make it my policy (even more so now) to make sure I go to places without this info more and places that have it less.
If someone is truly interested in what is in their meals there is a wealth of information on line for most chain restaurants as to the calorie count on all the items on their menues we don't need the government to tell us what to eat. Papers please.
You all realize that these chain restaurants already have the calorie information on hand, that if you ask for it you will be provided with the information, right? Oh you don't realize it? That's because though the information is available, no one knows it's available. If the information is already available why not do so in a more effective way so that people can actually benefit. I don't see the problem here! Why should we value business over individuals....In the words of Senders DON'T TREAD ON ME! Let me make my decisions, but give me the information to make it.
It seems to me that some of the people that spoke against this ban could have benefited from the calorie lists....
While someone CAN benefit, it does not mean that they WILL or SHOULD benefit. How many of the legislators actaully took the time to really look into this issue instead od just going along? Legislator Farley went to 7 different fast food establishments to see if they had the information. In every single one, they had the information and provided it for him. The information is there if people want it, it shouldn't be mandated. It's a small thing (getting smaller by the say) called the free market. Especially in times like now where most people, if they want, could jump on their phones and find out the same information on a corporate website, or where it's already being supplied, why mandate they do it? If people want it, the companies will supply it, regardless of mandates.
Angelo acted all bi-partisany on this by voting along party lines. (Shocker). Working to gether works...as long as you're working towards what we want.

How about this? People that are concerned about counting calories, they go to a book store and purchase one of the MANY books that have the calorie breakdown of just about any food imaginable. How do I know this? Am I some sort of super genius? NO! The fact is, it took minimal effort to find this information, and I don't rely on the government to hold my hand and guide me through life’s obstacles and wait for them to provide solutions to my personal problems. We are conditioning our population to wait for government to think for them. I am fat because "I don't know how many calories are in the 2 Big Mac's and large fries I eat daily". SS, Ang and the rest of the liberal elite continually assume that the little people are unable to think for themselves and solve their own problems. With the accessibility to the internet and the endless amount of information, you cannot use the excuse that people would never be able to find out how many calories are in a Big Mac without creating a law that forces companies to incur the cost of printing and displaying the information. This is ridiculous legislation.
