Stratton: Jobs cash needed in stimulus Mayor to make push during D.C. session
BY KATHLEEN MOORE Gazette Reporter

http://www.dailygazette.net/De.........>>>>.........

Stratton wants cities to get the funds directly. Sending the money to the states, as was done in the first round, didn’t work, he said. “It really hasn’t been helpful to getting this money out.”
If Schenectady gets a direct share of the next round of funds, Stratton has big plans.
“We want to train people for the jobs,” he said. “We could work with any number of job training agencies to really create a program — sort of a local WPA.”
He envisions a system in which stimulus funds pay for training, salaries and materials needed to complete city projects. Unemployed city residents would receive training and then be employed by the program.
They would focus on installing new water and sewer lines — which requires skilled work in trenches, as well as general digging and other labor — and repave streets.
It could “rebuild our crumbling neighborhoods,” Stratton said.
“That’s what we need, a WPA. If I get two minutes with the president, that’s what I’ll say,” he said. “And I’m sure the president will at least come around and shake hands, so two minutes isn’t out of the question.”
The Works Progress Administration was a program created by executive order of President Franklin D. Roosevelt during the Great Depression to combat unemployment. It operated from 1935 to 1943.

Stratton has lost it. If he gets stimulus money why not just hire a local contractor to do the work and get the most out of the money. By training and hiring people who are on unemployment Stratton is just creating another big government run money wasting public sector job that will suck taxpayer money down a rat hole after the stimulus money is gone. No wonder Schenectady is in the shape it's in.

Stratton never had it. His solution to everything is another idiotic governmental program. And chasing more business out of the area. The County wasted it's "stimulus" money on a bike path. Obama is smarter than to spend two seconds with him.

No wonder the City keeps going further down the toilet under his "watch". BTW, how's the City police reform going?-LOL!

This is by far one of biggest wastes of tax payer dollars. I know people that are on unemployment in this county and they 'have' to go for some kind of job training already. WE ARE ALREADY PAYING WITH OUR TAX DOLLARS FOR THIS GOVERNMENT PROGRAM!!!!

Hell, we even are paying with our tax dollars, through the metroplex, to pay for the 'ambassadors' that reside at the city mission.

When is this spending insanity going to stop???

And obama would be wise to check this all out before he hands them over our money. Oh that's right...he's not wise! He's just as bad, if not worse, than carter!

Stratton has been a huge failure. Answer one question for me. Since he became Mayor in 2003, how much has the budget increased? When you're done answering that, then we'll talk about the neighborhoods!

Maybe he wouldn't be wasting time talking to Obama? Every single neighborhood in the City has collapsed under Stratton. He has been a complete failure but since the opposing party has imploded nobody says nuthin.

Hopefully NNTP/Tea Party/businessman will mount a challenge next year. Did you hear Stratton's plan for the SPD? A County force that Sue Savage never supported.

Stratton says Obama advisers fail to mention WPA proposal
BY KATHLEEN MOORE Gazette Reporter

Many of the mayors attending Thursday’s conference on jobs at the White House were supporting the idea of a small-scale version of the WPA, but the president’s advisers did not even discuss it, Mayor Brian U. Stratton said.
Stratton is one of many mayors attending the conference, which included a four-hour session with the president’s secretary of the treasury, chief economics adviser and one of his three senior advisers.
While there was no talk of creating a new version of the Works Progress Administration, which sent many unemployed men to work during the Great Depression, the advisers indicated that they do agree with Stratton and other mayors on one point.
Economics adviser Lawrence Summers acknowledged that the first stimulus bill did not help local governments create jobs as much as it helped states balance their budgets, Stratton said.
Stratton said Summers did not promise that a second stimulus bill would cause money to be sent to local municipalities, as many mayors want. .................>>>>.................>>>>............http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01402&AppName=1

Attention Mr Stratton  maybe they didn't discuss your idea because it was a bad idea in the first place.

Leave it to Stratton to present 70+ year old socialism as a new idea. It didn't work then-it can't work now.

And he got re-elected? This is what will create more jobs-less government/less taxes/less City officials.
