Proposals aimed at enhancing business

BY KATHLEEN MOORE Gazette Reporter

Lower State Street may soon get a face-lift to help it connect with the rest of downtown.
Proposals for the area will be presented Wednesday at the Schenectady County Community College. Viewers can offer feedback from 7 to 9 p.m. in room 101 of the Stockade Building.
Zoning Officer Steve Strichman said the plans include new sidewalks and park improvements. The project does not include Erie Boulevard, which has its own design proposal under way.
On lower State Street the emphasis will be on paving.
“Sidewalks are on the list. A lot of it’s streetscape enhancements,” Strichman said.
That’s music to the ears of business owners, who have said for years that they need better sidewalks, new pavement and other beautification measures.
The proposals also attempt to connect SCCC to downtown and suggest ways for residential projects to be added to the area.
“It’s a really disconnected, under-utilized area,” Strichman said. “What can we do to revitalize the area?”
Part of the problem, he said, is that there’s very little green space. The area is 70 percent asphalt, he said.
So the small pocket park off State Street, where a miniature version of the Statue of Liberty stands, receives some attention in the proposals. .................>>>>...................>>>>..................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r00803&AppName=1

"Sidewalk improvements"? ROTFLMAO!! The problem is not sidewalks-its lack of business due to record taxes.

The same failed dusty "plans" over and over. How about brick pavers for the crosswalk? The same that were ripped up on Dean & Union St?

Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent.
Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and
speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.

They are kidding, right? More of our tax dollars thrown out the window. IF this area was so 'developable'....private business would have invested already.

The proposed Robinson's retail "mecca" by Metrograft Ray speaks volumes. Supposed to be a mall-now just another hole in the ground where retail used to be.

Like Silver Diner, like The Big Hose, like Van Dyke I, like Clinton's Square, like the old DSS building, etc., etc.,

Lower State seen as residential village
Officials hope private developers will buy in for infrastructure support

BY KATHLEEN MOORE Gazette Reporter

The dreams for lower State Street include turning side streets into walking paths, building three new parking garages, adding hundreds of residences and somehow convincing developers to pay for the work.
The plan may not come to fruition, but city workers have now created a full design for the area, in hopes of using it to encourage specific development that could eventually turn lower State Street into a booming village.
It might take 10 years. Or work could start in months. It all depends on whether anyone is willing to invest.
“I think it could happen,” said city Zoning Officer Steve Strichman, who worked on the proposal released this week. “I think it could be built out in 10 years. Things could start in two years. Look at downtown — things started in 2001, 2002, 2003, and then suddenly in 2004, boom!”
He also thinks developing residences in the lower State Street corridor could provide the fuel downtown needs to support retail — the final step in the reinvigoration desired.
“I think that’s the problem with Schenectady, why downtown doesn’t function like Saratoga. We need more residences downtown,” Strichman said. “This could be almost a commuter village.” ..................>>>>...................>>>>.........................................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01200&AppName=1

It may work better in Saratoga because of the low crime rate and abundance of stores/shops available to the people who live there. What does Schenectady have to offer, an overpriced theater, a bunch of bars, and a chance to get mugged. Where would you rather live?

Right as soon as Stratton reforms the SPD? lol-

"Residential village"-now these idiots want to close streets? No stores, no groceries, no schools and people will flood in? You can't make this stuff up.
