A water main break in front of the Domino’s Pizza at 1441 Broadway Saturday morning helped punch a hole in the shop’s parking lot, sinking a car and prompting a rooftop rescue. Schenectady Police Sgt. Luciano Savoia said the Schenectady Fire Department responded to calls of a sinkhole and damage from the water main break at about 7:30 a.m. Saturday. Schenectady Fire Department Deputy Chief Raymond Senecal said the responders discovered that the main break had eroded the sand under the parking lot used by the Domino’s and Guidarelli’s Liquor Store. A Dodge Saturn sedan parked in front of the Domino’s entrance tipped into a 15-by-15-foot hole. “We had an occupant in the building. It was early in the morning and he was sleeping. He couldn’t come out the front door because the sinkhole was right in front of his front door,” Senecal said. “We had to take him off the roof with a ladder because there was only one entrance to the apartment.” Senecal said National Grid cut the power and gas to the building and the water was shut down. “The basement to the Domino’s was full of water; it actually had mud in it, I believe,” he said. “Our concern was right behind that is an embankment and there’s nothing shoring up those buildings, so the water was actually going right through the bottom of the building. So being that it’s on a hill, the water came through on the fi rst floor and exited the basement. Our concern was compromise of the building structure.” .....................>>>>..................................>>>>.....................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01501&AppName=1
Store open despite water main break SCHENECTADY — Despite a 15-foot hole in its parking lot, Guidarelli’s Liquor Store is open for business. A broken water main undermined the soil at 1441 Broadway so badly that a car sunk and an apartment dweller had to be rescued from the roof Saturday. But Guidarelli’s workers weren’t singing the blues on Monday. “We’re open! Come on down!” said Ron Slater cheerfully. “We’re not going to close for rain, sleet, snow or water main breaks.” Workers were trying to develop a advertisement-worthy slogan regarding the incident, but so far had only gotten far enough to say that even a water main break wouldn’t stop them from “saving you money this holiday season.” The parking lot will be closed for the foreseeable future — all Slater has heard is that repairs will be “not soon” — but there is street parking. There is no word on whether Domino’s Pizza, at the same location, will be open.
SCHENECTADY Flooded businesses denied payment by city’s insurer Water main break city’s responsibility, one owner claims BY KATHLEEN MOORE Gazette Reporter
Water pouring into two businesses from a broken city water main is not the city’s fault, its insurance company has decided. It denied the claims submitted by Domino’s Pizza and Guidarelli’s Liquor Store for damage done when a water main broke in front of 1441 Broadway. The business owners came to work on Dec. 12 to find a 15-foot sinkhole in their parking lot, a step away from the front door. The problem was discovered at 4 a.m., after a river of water had flowed through the building’s fi rst floor, down into the basement and out onto the ravine below. By the time city workers shut off the water and repaired the pipe, there was substantial damage. “It wrecked everything,” said Ron Slater at Guidarelli’s. Domino’s basement was filled with water and mud. The same pipe broke 18 years ago, but the leak began during the day. Workers noticed it quickly and called the city. Even so, the city ended up paying for $7,000 in damage, Slater said. He had expected the city to pay this time as well. He was taken aback when insurance carrier Trident denied the claim. The liquor store has hired Michael Cuevas, chief counsel for the Republican minority in the state Assembly, to fight the denial. Slater said he thinks the decision was based on faulty data. “It was a pipe in the road. They’re claiming we have to maintain our pipe, but this isn’t our main, it’s in the road. They’re not understanding that,” Slater said. “It’s way at the top of our hill and it just ran this way because water runs downhill.” ........................>>>>...................>>>>...................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01201&AppName=1

SCHENECTADY Broadway ’09 sinkhole suit against city heads to court BY STEVEN COOK Gazette Reporter Reach Gazette reporter Steven Cook at 395-3122 or scook@dailygazette.com.
A dispute over who’s responsible for a large sinkhole that in 2009 devoured a parking lot off Broadway and damaged two businesses has landed in court. Michael Guidarelli, owner of land at 1437 and 1441-43 Broadway, fi led suit against the city of Schenectady earlier this month in state Supreme Court in Schenectady County. Guidarelli is seeking damages, alleging negligence on the part of the city due to a city water main. “The defendant so negligently and carelessly maintained, repaired, and operated the aforesaid water system so as to cause damage to the plaintiff’s real property,” the suit reads. The incident happened Dec. 12, 2009. A surge of water fl owed through the building’s fi rst fl oor, down into the basement and out onto the ravine to the rear. The torrent left a 15-foot sinkhole in the parking lot, a step away from the front door, along with mud and water damage to the fi rst fl oor and basements of Domino’s Pizza and Guidarelli’s Liquor Store. The suit marks the next step in an escalating dispute over who is responsible. The businesses submitted claims to the city, but the city’s insurance company, Trident, later rejected them, fi nding the damage not the city’s fault. An attorney for the liquor store argued the decision was based on faulty data. The break was in the line under the street, not the one leading to the businesses, a crucial distinction. .......................>>>>.........................>>>>........................................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01605&AppName=1
If Stratton spent the taxpayer money on infrastructure instead of handing out tax breaks to millionaires, the break probably would not have happened.
But again, we all know that the dems are more interested in giving money to their millionaires cronies downtown and saying to he** with the rest of the city, right DV?????
Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent. Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.
The city is responsible for the damage that the broken water main caused but being broke they will use every trick in the book to avoid paying the claim.

Wonder what happened to the old boy DV ... he's destroying his daily average in posts. LOL
Well, didn't he say he's giving this up for Lent.
Actually, I think he may have finally gone to confession and told of his sins of cheering for socialism and for taking away from the poor to give to the rich, so the priest gave him a penance to stay away from these boards for a certain amount of time.
