SCHENECTADY -- One high school student is under arrest after allegedly stabbing another student in the leg with a kitchen knife in a hallway this morning. The school district said Schenectady High School went on lockdown around 7:45 a.m. after two students began scuffling. Schenectady police said Royan R. Premchan, 18, of Elm Street, has been charged with second-degree assault and will be arraigned in City Court today. Police did not release the name of the 16-year-old student who was treated and released from Ellis Hospital with two-stitches to the right leg.
The lockdown, which requires all students and staff to remain in their classrooms and allows no one to enter or leave the building, was in effect for about an hour and a half.
"Violence in our schools will not be tolerated under any circumstances, and appropriate disciplinary and legal steps will be taken to deal with the student(s) involved in this situation," Superintendent Eric Ely said in a statement.
