The New Jersey governor's race is neck and neck between leading Republican and Democrat contenders just days before the election, a new poll released early Sunday morning showed.
GOP Challenger Chris Christie held a meager one-point lead over incumbent Democrat Jon Corzine, 43 to 42 percent, in the latest Monmouth University/Gannett New Jersey Poll. The poll shows a shift from two weeks ago, when the race was tied at 39 percent.
Christie, however, had 86 percent of his party's support, while Corzine only had 77 percent from state Democrats, according to the poll.
"This election will be defined by turnout like few others before it," Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute, said in a statement."Many Democrats are sitting on the sidelines and not considered to be likely voters at this point."
Chris Daggett, the Independent contender, dropped 6 percent from the last poll and fell to an 8 percent mark from his 14 percent high two weeks ago.
Independent voters support Christie over Corzine by an overwhelming majority -- 51 to 29 percent, according to the poll.
"Independent voters are simply unhappy with the job Governor Corzine has done over the past four years," Murray said.

Obama goes to NJ to support Corzine right? Obama says that he and Corzine have a good working relationship. How well they work together.
In my opinion, that translates into, obama won't or can't or will refuse to work with Christie. Kinda like a threat if ya ask me.

Fearing a potentially devastating Democratic loss, the highly controversial Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) group and its affiliated organizations are gearing up to tip the scales and re-elect the beleaguered incumbent in the hard-fought New Jersey gubernatorial race, sources tell Newsmax.
"ACORN is heavily involved in Gov. Jon Corzine's get-out-the-vote operation, but is maintaining a low profile at the insistence of the Corzine campaign," Matthew Vadum, senior editor of the conservative Capital Research Center think tank, tells Newsmax. "If Corzine manages to win reelection, he doesn't want the victory tainted by his close association with ACORN."
Wall Street Journal columnist and author John Fund wrote Tuesday that "Plenty of reasons exist for suspecting absentee fraud may play a significant role in tomorrow's Garden State contests."
ACORN-linked groups from neighboring Pennsylvania and New York "appear to have moved into the state," Fund wrote.
Fund also reported that the state's Democratic Party is pressuring county clerks around the Garden State to downplay signature checks on absentee ballots. And then find out that the men were sent into the neighborhood by the Democratic Party for GOTV operations - complete with lists of voters names, addresses and phones numbers! That is what happened Sunday on a quiet street in Morris Township. The officer, who’s name we are with holding, specifically heard the men discussing that he was a police officer and that they now know where he lives. The officer confronted the men and they took off. He contacted the local police who responded and caught up with them and about a dozen other men a few blocks away. WASHINGTON – Republicans wrested political control of Virginia from the Democrats on Tuesday and New Jersey's unpopular Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine was fighting for his political life as independent voters swung behind the GOP in both states. It was a troubling sign for President Barack Obama and his party heading into an important midterm election year.
Republican Gov.-elect Bob McDonnell's victory in Virginia over Democrat R. Creigh Deeds was a triumph for a GOP looking to rebuild after being booted from power in national elections in 2006 and 2008. It also was a setback for the White House in a swing state that was a crucial part of Obama's electoral landslide just a year ago.
In New Jersey, exit polls showed Corzine locked in a close race, with independents heavily favoring his Republican challenger Chris Christie in a three-way contest with independent Chris Daggett.
The president had personally campaigned for Deeds and Corzine, raising the stakes in low-energy off-year elections.
Early returns in Virginia showed that by a 2-1 margin McDonnell was winning rapidly growing, far-flung Washington, D.C., suburbs — places like Loudoun and Prince William counties — that Republicans historically have won but that Obama prevailed in last fall by winning over swing voters.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie -- speaking at The Plaza hotel about his plan to cap property-tax increases at 2.5 percent -- ripped into his state's teachers association yesterday, blasting it as an "an absolutely out-of-control union that is used to getting everything it wants."
The famously blunt governor said the Garden State must work aggressively to slash spending and cut taxes.
Speaking to a receptive crowd at an event for the right-of-center Manhattan Institute, the Republican pol warned, "We are careening our way toward becoming Greece."
As part of his sweeping plans to rein in spending, Christie has battled with the New Jersey Education Association.
