Lewis Golub, a member of the legendary family that founded Price Chopper supermarkets, died Sunday after a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's disease. He was 78.
Golub, along with cousin Neil Golub, took over the grocery store chain from their fathers, Ben and Bill Golub, in the early 1970s. The two men expanded the business from 50 stores to its current 120 locations. "Lew was a very bright, analytical guy," Neil Golub, president and CEO of Price Chopper, said Sunday night. "He was the brains behind establishing our financial strategy."
Lewis Golub was a tremendous business leader in Schenectady who created thousands of jobs. He will be remebered for establishing an employee profit sharing plan at Price Chopper and his charity including sustaining to local ALS center at St Peters Hospital.
He actually showed up to my grandfathers wake years ago. (He owned/ran a fruits and vegetable distribution business in the Mendans(sp?) marketplace). But i remember grandma thinking it was wonderful that the Golubs showed, whatever that's worth.

Lew Golub did much for this community. He also was very helpful to us at The College of Saint Rose and served in many different capacities. A huge loss to the Capital District.

A public shiva for Lewis Golub, chairman of the board of the Golub Corp. who died Sunday at age 78, will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Congregation Gates of Heaven on Ashmore Avenue. A funeral will precede the shiva, or formal mourning period, at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Golub was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, a year ago. He served as chief executive officer of the Golub Corp. from 1982 to 2000 when he retired. His cousin, Neil Golub, is the company’s president and chief executive officer. The corporation owns and operates the Price Chopper supermarket chain. Lewis Golub was involved in many philanthropic organizations and served as a founding board member of Union Graduate College in Schenectady. He and his wife, Colleen, donated $500,000 to the graduate college for its new campus and building at 80 Nott Terrace. The graduate college will name the Career Services Center and the Presidential Office after Lewis and Colleen Golub, said Laura Schweitzer, graduate college president. “He was on the presidential search committee that recruited me to Schenectady,” Schweitzer said. She was hired a year ago and started in January. “He was a wonderfully warm man and was very funny during my interview. He made me feel comfortable through his humor,” Schweitzer said. “He was very bright, very committed, a visionary who helped create the vision for the independent graduate college.” Golub was vice chairman of the board of Union Graduate College until May. “He was ill at that time but showed a commitment to the graduate college,” Schweitzer said.
