I mean specifically what other government programs should be cut so we could fund such a thing?
You don't have to cut programs or spending silly. You just raise the taxes on the little people, while the millionaires get exemptions saving them tens of thousands of dollars annually to contribute to the Democrats. That is the recipe for success.
In the Proctor's Gallery are a number of businesses. Each pay rent to Proctors, yet Proctor's pays absolutely no property tax and receives hundreds of thousands of rent per year. How are we to rationalize that great injustice to the City taxpayer?
It's worse than that. Death Ray flipped them Key Bank for $150,000 so they can take a 3 story bank off the tax rolls then open a tax free catering hall. Now every other business is trying to lower their assessment and no caterer can compete since they pay NOTHING in taxes. This will cause many businesses to go under.
If you ask Mercury Morris to pay anything towards a PILOT he gets violent. How dare the County sheeple demand he pay his fair share for police and fire protection? How do we get this liberal moron back to Jamestown?
I hope they serve bagels and lox at the new bagel shop.

The community draws great benefit from having the Proctor's Theater remaining a vibrant and vital part of the community. I have ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEM with the theater and the arcade being tax exempt. It is a non-profit corporation for the purposes of enriching the community with art and culture. Only totalitarians would oppose art and culture.
BTW -- I believe that NYSTI's funding should be completely restored as well. We need more art and culture in our communities.
Pay for your art and culture yourself. Which is more important????? Spending money on art and culture? Or spending money to address the vacant housing in the city.
Tax money should be used only on necessities. The city has a whopping 25% vacant properties which attracts vagarants, criminals, and drug dealers.
DV, here is what happens:
1. Taxes are raised for stupid arts and culture 2. City residents cannot afford the taxes to pay for such non-essentials 3. Schenectady city residents are leaving the city in record numbers with their homes bought up by slumlords like Popolizio, or they just abandon their homes. 4. Money continues to be spend WASTED on art and culture instead of spending on cleaning up the neighborhoods to make them safe 5. Bums enter the vacant houses trying to keep warm 6. Bums build a little fire to keep warm 7. Little fire gets big, house totally engulfed 8. Since houses are so close together, fires often end up burning neighboring properties 9. And since the good people have left and the neighboring properties are owned by the slumlords, the slumlords abandon those properties 10. More burned out buildings, more vacant decrepit buildings. Even the good tenants don't want to live near that, they leave too.
And like Mr Sheehan, peole lose lives in a fire. But hell, DV, keep taking away money from cleaning up the neighborhoods and keep spending in on art and culture. Doesn't matter if peoples houses burn down, doesn't matter if people lose their lives. People's homes and lives are not important. It's perfectly fine of people die because in your warped mind, it's more important to spend money on art and culture.
If you want art and culture, get yourself a dang job and pay for it YOURSELF

This has to be one of the dumbest posts ever. The State should continue to support a taxpayer ripoff where the director is accused of ripping off thousands? Sickening and worse that someone actually supports it. Proctor's can afford to pay a $500,000 PILOT. Take it out of Morris' huge salary. Proctor's should set an example not just let Ellis and Boys Club put skin in the game. Run Proctor's like a business and boot the DEM incompetents on the payroll. We need businesses and job creators not DEMS gaming the system for personal enrichment. We have enough of those.

What has been the benfit????? Tell us, DV, HOW, tell us HOW a whopping 25 years or more of wild spending of tax dollars on Proctors help improve the city????? Provide some evidence WITH PROOF that houses in the city have increasingly become owner occupied. What has happened to city services? Tell us how wild spending of tax dollars on Proctors has resulted in reducing the amount of slumlord in the city. Tell us what has happend to the rate of vacant houses in the city? Tell us how many theater-goers who came to a show but lived OUTSIDE the city have bought houses in the city to LIVE in the city??????? Tell us what has happend to the graduation rate in the public schools? Tell us what has happend to the taxes/

4 new jobs is more than 0 new jobs. And the same tax incentives that we are using to draw business to Schenectady .. other communities used in the 60's and 70's and 80's to draw businesses away from Schenectady.
Speaking about wastes of money --- how come you don't jump down the back of the GOP State Senate and GOP Governor who spent like $2 billion of tax payer money to cut down Luther Forest to build the tech place there ------- were guys like Hugh Farley so stupid that they could not have thought to use that money in the cities of Albany, Schenectady, or Troy to build the same thing and without having to destroy an ecosystem to do it.
My guess is that Farley and Pataki were not paid off enough to bring the tech campus to Schenectady. Probably weren't offered free trips to Hawaii or Disneyworld.
Personally, I don't like all that money for the Global Founaries. But tell us DV, what will be the wage for those jobs when it opens????? What is the typical wage of the people who work at all these taxpayer businessses. How much does a dishwasher make at Bombers????? How much does a popcorn maker make at the Bow Tie? The "jobs" downtown are by far NOT tax producing jobs. Quite the opposite, they are low wage jobs where the employees will be raking in the bucks from EIC

Here's what wild spending on "arts" has created-IMPLOSION. City can't pay police and fire. Property values are in free fall. Unemployment is the highest in the area. Lines longer at DSS and for moving vans.
Many more properties taken off the tax rolls by unchecked Proctor's pigs. Now they are opening a catering hall! Nobody can believe the arrogance and screw you attitude of these arts idiots. They still don't use the theatre space properly and put unpopular bombs on the main stage-wasting even more money. No accountability-and nobody dares to criticize the gross mismanagement.

Yes, what would you cut?? Would you prefer to have criminals ruling the streets because you want arts funded? Wou prefer bridge inspections to stop so that bridges will fall down and people will be killed....in order to fund NYSTI? No, NO, I know, DV would prefer that the state abolish the comptrollers office....that way there would be no audits of all these places that use tax dollars. Maybe money should stop being spend on the mental patents in the institutions, send them to the NFPs in the community who have no money who will in turn put them out on the street.....let them out so they can endanger the lives of good people. Of course, we don't need strate spending to protect people, hell, why have a banking dept -- just let the banks do whatever the hell they please, steal form their customers, why have an insurance dept - perfectly fine if an insurance plan lies to it's subscribers and the subscribers lose their home when the insurnace doesn't pay. Abolish building codes or, at least, don't bother licensing trades people, don't have an AG office to go after the real estatge moguls who may have substandard buildings that people might die in. Don't inspect railroad tracks, let the train derail and people can be killed.
After all, DV says arts is so important.
DV, get yourself a job and pay for the arts out of your own pocket

The taxpayers have dumped enough into Proctor's bottomless pit. $10 MILLION in County funds-$4 MILLION in State taxes for AC-another $300,000 to run failed arts nights. Run it as a paying basis and fire Morris and all the other DEM incompetents that are living large off the oppressed taxpayers. DVR wants to continue this ripoff because it helps grease the machines wheels. Smash the machine. Go after everything it has it's filthy mitts on.
Hmmm .. lets see .. 2 GOP members out of 15 County Leg members .. if that is successful in your mind == I bet you think that if someone wins 13% of the vote and his or her opponent gets 87% of the vote that the one with 13% was the winner .... of if one team scores 2 homeruns and the other 13 homeruns --you think that the one with 2 home runs should get the World Series Trophy.
If you can do better running the parking lots -- go volunteer to help them run them.
Just show me where I said that the Republicans were doing a good job at winning seats. In fact, I have criticized them many times for not even finding names to put up as candidates in the past elections for the city. I never said that the Republicans have been successful, I have said that there is a lot of work that needs to be done, but that's a lot of getting incumbents unseated also, and now there's lots of incumbents who have never been challenged, either.
What we really need in Rotterdam or Schenectady is for Ben's Kosher Restaurant + Deli + Catering to open a location up here. I will have to put a bug in Ray Gillen's ear to try to lure them up here.

Maybe they can go up near 1600 Union St. I bet that'll be appreciated.

ya, Business District with MANY MANY taxpaying locally owned businesses, I can see why YOU wouldn't want to consider that a "favorite" neighborhood. You like the Proctor's district better.
