Pinhead Susan's - assessed at $399K, tax exempt $13,685 from 2002 until 2011

Stockade Inn - assessed at $1,217,500, tax exempt $206,160 from 2004 until 2013

Van Dyke - not even in the County Tax Real Property system??????

Better that someone own the Gillette House AND PAY TAXES ON IT! Why is Schenectady giving away property tax free?!? This is a major reason why our taxes keep going up and up. Let me guess, Metroplex will come in, give MacDonald yet another County Taxpayer grant to run another free location in the City. Please.

"The County and the Chamber created the hardship by allowing the interior to deteriorate" stated Kirston.

What happened to the nearly a million in County taxpayers dollars dumped in this toilet to create a County visitors center? BTW contrary to many Gazetto reports the first female doctor did not reside there. It's not a historic site. Working together works!

No wonder the fiscally incompetent DEMS can't pay for basic police and fire protection. Working together works!

The businesses generate sales tax revenue which means taxes are being paid even if
the property were 100% exempted from property tax.

The owners and employees pay income tax which means that taxes are being paid.

The vendors and other service providers who supply the business or provide services to these businesses pay income tax which means taxes are being paid.

Finally - the property tax exemption gradually phases out .. so the owners are actually paying property
tax
.. just not 100% - but they are still paying taxes.

Apparently the Republicans who post here would rather have these buildings empty and become breeding
grounds for their favorite kind of animals  -- rats.

If MacDonald used this property as rental property, he would have to pay property taxes. Because he is connected with Gillen, he can open a tax free, for profit business which PAYS NO PROPERTY TAXES!! How do you think that is going to affect every property owner in the Stockade?

Who is paying for the plowing? Those lovely street lights on the corner? Not a business owner, just the poor slobs called TAXPAYERS who foot the bill for businesses all over Schenectady. First the County puts millions into this rat hole out of taxpayer money, then the City gives it away to a tax exempt business? The County taxpayer and the City taxpayers have been run over twice.

Also, a tax exempt business (like a Target or Price Chopper) brings JOBS to the area. It helps employ people in the area. A bagel cafe, bars and restaurants? Minimum wage jobs and not even that many to boot. You tax exempt a business if it's going to significantly help the City. Right now, Schenectady has done the opposite. The businesses are more of a liability than an asset.

The building is empty because the DEM morons on the County Legislature, led by unpopular Landslide Savage, decided they needed a County Tourism Center-lol. They dumped a million taxpayer dollars into this dump because of it's historical significance as the home to the first female Doctor. They then flipped it to the Chamber for one dollar (the going rate for property Downtown). The DEM controlled Chamber allowed it to rot and could not sell it.

Oops-the first female Doctor lived someplace else. There is no historical significance to this dump but it improved values of a DEM fossil on the County Leg. And oops-we don't care about historical districts if the buyer is in the Friends and Family Club. There is no demand for a Bagel Shop there. It is a way for the DEM planning morons to get out of a jam they created. The funniest part is that coffee maven DVR states that Arthur's large $1.25 coffee was overpriced but a $5 Latte is a deal?

Conveniently, it's right around the corner from 531 Liberty. I bet they do a landmark (pardon the pun) business.

Another one of your lies -- I have NEVER made any comment about the price of coffee at Arthur's or anyplace
else.     FYI - I have never purchased a latte or a flavored cup of coffee ANYWHERE.    I drink regular coffee -
black - no sugar.   And I prefer to make coffee at home rather than purchase it out.

Arthur's Market might have survived if it had a better business plan.    The folks supported it for years when it was a market.   The new incarnation was a lot different from the original -- more of an over priced coffee house.

You never mentioned coffee prices? Must be the other DVR. Some people can read here.

I have never mentioned coffee prices -- and am quite sure that I have never purchased coffee at
Arthur's  -- the last time I was in Arthur's was probably 20 years ago.

WTF? You're making absolutely no sense. If you hadn't been in Arthur's in 20 years why would say that it's overpriced?

Why would DV go to a business which pays income, sales, property and school taxes when he can go Downtown? Let DV support businesses which contribute NOTHING to the tax base and receive free City services for their nonpayment. Again, the businesses in the City are a liability, not an asset to the community.

What, buy a bagel for a dollar and THE TAXPAYER pays the "whopping" four cents that goes to the county.  And you really think that the place will be so flooded with customers that the four cents here and there will making up for the hundreds of thousancs they don't pay in property taxes!

Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent.
Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and
speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.

But - and this is very important...

Competing business are going to LOSE that business to the bagel shop...  Whether it is Burger King or Brueggers...  Those other businesses are NOT getting all these handouts, and now they are put at a disadvantage because this new place is!

I have no problem with some incentives like this.

The absolute absurdity of it is that the morons in charge are giving HUGE property tax benefits on EVERY damn project they promote downtown and none of it is helping the overburdened taxpayers of the city and county.

What part of  "I don't buy coffee at coffee out" do you not understand ???????????????????????????????????
The last time, I bought coffee out was at Dunkin Donuts in Rotterdam when several of my friends and I met -- I think it was in November.    Kelly would remember the night.
