My gut on this is that this is not going to be some McDonalds or Wendy's. my guess is that the Jack McDonalds (not hamburgers) might put in an upscale coffee joint with a drive thru...Just a gut feeling. I can't see them tearing it down!

A drive thru in the stockade.  Somehow, some way, Ron Severson had to be part of that idea.

Friggin classic.

At a historic building. That the County sheeple sunk $1 MILLION into. Yeah, working together works!

And I'm sure they also will be TAX EXEMPT!!! Sure hope those coffee's are at least 10 bucks a cup for the recouping of sales tax. That should transfer into at least 10 new homeowners walking away from their homes because their taxes are TOO high!!!

All that Gillen and Savage have to do is stop giving these lucrative tax exemptions to these businesses so it will ease the burden of the homeowners.

Isn't that what the metroplex was suppose to accomplish???

NEXT ELECTION CYCLE.......DISSOLVE THE METROPLEX THROUGH A PERMISSIVE REFERENDUM!!!!

SCHENECTADY
Drive-through cut from bagel shop plan

BY KATHLEEN MOORE Gazette Reporter

The historic Gillette House will not have a drive-through if it becomes home to a bagel shop and coffeehouse, owner John McDonald said Friday.
McDonald had asked the Board of Zoning Appeals to grant permission for a modern drive-through at the entrance to the city’s Historic Stockade District, but he has now formally dropped that part of his plan.
“I talked to some of my neighbors about their issues and decided to delete that,” he said.
Some opposition had already formed, as residents objected to the modern intrusion on their quaint neighborhood and to the possible safety problem of cars crossing a sidewalk in a busy pedestrian area.
McDonald still needs permission to turn the residential house into an independent bagel shop and coffeehouse, which would be open in the mornings and early afternoons. Customers would park at the nearby Van Dyck parking lot, which is also owned by the McDonald family.
The BZA is expected to hear his proposal Jan. 5.
The drive-through notwithstanding, there is some support for the idea.
The Stockade Association has written a letter to the BZA supporting the idea — though it was written before the drive-through was announced — and a preservationist said the building is more likely to be saved if the bagel shop is approved.
“One of the basic ways to save historic housing is to have it used,” Heritage Foundation Chairwoman Gloria Kishton said. “If it’s vacant, no one’s taking care of it.”
She noted that the plan would not destroy any interior historic elements because the house was gutted years ago by Schenectady County.
McDonald said in his application that he plans to create a “historic theme” in the shop.
“The inside is in terrible, terrible shape,” he said. “We’re just trying to fi nd the best use for the building.”
In his application, he added, “This building has been vacant over 20 years. It is located on a prominent corner of the city. It needs to be put back into a practical use rather than remain vacant.”
He hopes to open next spring or summer.........................>>>>...................>>>>.................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01002&AppName=1

What about the corner of McClellan and State should that remain vacant too Gazetto editors? We don't need no Walgreen's that would generate sales tax, property tax revenue, and sell rag Gazettos. They might put in an ugly drive thru that most customers require.

The clueless Mayor "For Life" wants to preserve the horrible pedestrian friendly dirt parking lot. Who writes your editorials-Arthur The Indian?-lol-

No It's not part of the 2 block Schenectady "miracle". It sits totally empty like hundreds of parcels in the City. They sold great coffee at reasonable prices.

Did you hear the latest idea from the DEM City morons? They will attempt to trace former property owners to fine them $1,000. Rotsa ruck with that.

Allow drive-through and add to tax roll

This letter is in response to the Nov. 5 article, “Gillette House proposed as bagel shop,” and following related pieces. I am alarmed by the propensity of Schenectadians to get up in arms over simple business proposals.
For years, Schenectady’s downtown was not a great area to be unless you had to. We have been lucky in recent years to attract some private-sector business, but might be more successful if we weren’t concerned with a proposed drive-through at a bagel shop. If a private investor wants to add to the (heavily taxed) tax base of downtown Schenectady, we must allow them an opportunity to do as they see fit in creating a viable business. If this includes adding a drive-through, so be it.
The Gillette House has been vacant for over 20 years. How the neighbors can take so much interest in a drive-through that may cause “noise concerns,” when it provides the opportunity for a historic building to be salvaged, baffl es me.
This sort of obstructionist thinking seems to be prevalent recently with citizens and the editors of this paper. Two recent projects by Re4orm Architecture have been criticized for their “modern” look. In no great cities do all the buildings have the exact same style. These new, cutting-edge designs are critical for a city that prides itself on its new technological business. As we move into the future, we need to make sure our infrastructure follows.
As a city resident, I hope that we can put aside our concerns about “dangerous” and “noisy” bagel shop drivethroughs aside, and allow businesses the freedom to join our community, and tax rolls.
