Schenectady school district salaries above city's Sunday, August 23, 2009 By Michael Goot (Contact) , Kathleen Moore (Contact) Gazette Reporter
SCHENECTADY — Ismat Alam could be making $60,000 more if she balanced the school district’s books instead of watching over the city’s finances. It’s a poorly kept secret; workers at City Hall said they all know they could be making more at a school district. But few of them realized precisely how much more they could be making. “I’m shocked,” Alam said after learning that her counterpart at the Schenectady City School District made $155,167 this year. Alam makes $94,554. But she has experience running school finances, at Skidmore College, as well as experience with corporate and municipal finances. She never imagined that the slight difference in education could result in such a pay disparity. “It just does seem quite high,” she said. The school district’s finance chief, Michael San Angelo, also made more than his counterpart at the Albany City School District, which has a somewhat larger budget but fewer students because so many now attend charter schools. Albany’s finance chief makes $139,700. Disparities can be found in any of the top jobs at the city and the school district. The city’s head attorney, for example, makes $22,000 less than the school district’s attorney. They enjoy nearly identical benefits packages, including pensions and health insurance. But it’s not just top jobs — even secretaries make 26 percent more at the Schenectady City School District than they do at the city.....................>>>>................>>>>.................http://www.dailygazette.com/news/2009/aug/23/0823_cityschoolpay/
Amazing. Now, you KNOW that they're going to use this as a reason to state that the city taxes aren't high enough. After all, if the people running the school district are making a certain amount, the people running the city should be making more.
