And now, the Schenectady Police Department has gone online with what will be a new monthly Internet newsletter called the Electric City Defender.
"We're thinking outside the box of ways we can reduce crime," said City Police Spokesman Sgt. Eric Clifford. "Clearly, driving around in a police car isn't enough and we're looking to educate the community to help themselves."
He said the goal of the correspondence is to identify crimes that are trending upward and then provide Schenectady residents with common-sense tips -- like keeping GPS and their case holders out of sight in one's vehicle -- to help protect themselves from being victimized.
