Over a dozen independent candidates for local offi ce met Tuesday’s deadline for filing petitions to appear on the November ballot, including one who hopes to be Johnstown’s next mayor. City resident Stuart Myzal said he’s running for mayor to bring a fresh perspective to the offi ce. Myzal said he’s lived in Johnstown for 40 years and worked at the Tryon Residential Center for the last 14 years. He said he’s retiring next week due to injuries suffered restraining one of the young detainees at the facility, and his friends encouraged him to run for mayor due to his background as the president of the Schenectady Central Labor Council. “I’ve been a union person for the last 19 years. I want Johnstown to be a nice place to live and a safe and secure place for people,” Myzal said. Myzal will face incumbent Mayor Sarah Slingerland, a Republican who has no primary challenger and, until Tuesday, had no general election opponent. Myzal said he’s a registered Democrat but decided to run too late to run as a Democrat. He will instead run as independent on the “Prime” party line. In Gloversville, Republicans Jo-Ann Clear and Dayton King both filed independent petitions to run for mayor, enabling their candidacies to survive past the September primary. Republican John Castiglione filed an independent petition for councilman at large, as did Ray Hindes Jr., who is running as part of the Wandering Moose party. Former Gloversville Common Council member Shirley Savage filed an independent petition for Gloversville 4th Ward Supervisor, where she will face independent candidate Ellen Anadio, currently Gloversville’s 4th Ward Common Council member. ................>>>>..................>>>>............http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01101&AppName=1
