working example The arts have played a major role in the revitalization efforts in downtown Schenectady. Gail Kehn, vice president of visitor services for the Chamber of Schenectady County, said on a dull winter night, a few hundred people venture downtown for Art Night Schenectady. In nice weather, a thousand people are downtown. Artists were some of the first people on board with the downtown revitalization. Proctors was one of the first properties revitalized, followed by a working artists’ studio at 440 State St. associated with Proctors. But Kehn said art isn’t the only thing revitalizing downtown; rather, it’s the synergy of restaurants, Proctors, businesses and artists working together. “It’s not like if we didn’t have [artists] we’d be fine, but I don’t think they are a cure-all,” she said. An important element of Art Night Schenectady is that businesses agree to stay open. Most downtown businesses close by 6 p.m. but on Art Night are open until 9 p.m. Art Night Schenectady also helps promote downtown. Art is displayed in vacant spaces in need of renovation or for lease, which Jim Salengo, executive director of the Downtown Schenectady Improvement Corporation, said helps to generate activity and interest in the space. “It accomplishes both goals,” Salengo said. “The artists who may not have access to gallery space show their work, and it also showcases the real estate.” The initiative has already worked. The Jay Street Fine Arts Supply store was once a vacant space used as a gallery during Art Night. Salengo said most of the city’s downtown building owners are receptive to the idea and DSIC is looking to put a lot more art into vacant spaces in the coming months............

That says it all right there. Efforts being the key word. FAILED EFFORTS! Philip Morris's vision for downtown has failed miserably. It's had ZERO impact on the economy, or the major crime problem in Schenectady. The gang bangers aren't putting down their weapons and spending their drug money on a show at Proctors.

This is the type of "news" the Gazetto is infamous for. What businesses have relocated Downtown without a taxpayer handout? ZERO-NADA. Even worse is the constant lying. No crime Downtown? Renaissance? All you kool-aid drinkers need to take a walk below Erie on State. Go on Art's Night-LOL! Amsterdam does not need or what any Metrograft. They have enough tax issues.
