MCGARRY McGarry, 52, teaches in the Duanesburg Central School District and owns a professional photography business. Though he’s never served a public offi ce, he had stints as a committeeman in the Schenectady County Conservative Party. The lifelong Rotterdam resident said he was motivated to run for town office out of frustration over the broader state of politics and the spiraling rate of taxes faced on all levels. He said his goals include restoring civility to local government and holding the line on new taxes. “Property taxes continue to make it difficult for people to stay here,” he said. “The tax levy must not increase, and if anything, decrease in order to encourage residents and businesses to stay.” If elected, McGarry pledged to freeze the tax levy at the 2009 rate. He also promised to help make REMS self-sustaining, so that the ambulance company won’t need to be funded through a new taxing authority. “In the short-term, REMS needs to get back on its feet and become self-sustaining,” he said. “There is new management and I’m confi dent it can happen.”
This was printed on the on-line version of the Gazette today and were emailed to us for posting:
Conservative candidate has the experience and energy for town supervisor
As a resident of the town of Rotterdam for the past 18 years and a lifelong registered Republican, I feel compelled to write about why I am voting for Brian McGarry, who is part of the No New Tax Party, for Rotterdam Town Supervisor on Nov. 3. I've known Brian for over 15 years as both a fellow educator and parent. Change is so vitally needed in Rotterdam and Brian McGarry is exactly what Rotterdam needs. He will return civility to our local government. Brian is a lifelong Rotterdam resident. He is a father and husband. He is a landlord, a homeowner, a business owner (McGarry Photography since 1979) and an educator. Brian is a registered Conservative and believes in a limited role for government. He also thinks government has grown too much and wants taxes frozen so homeowners and businesses are encouraged to stay in Rotterdam. Each day, we are being inundated with negative attack pieces from the two major parties. Brian is part of the No New Tax Party. Many on that team, including Brian, have never held public office before. For me, that's a badge of honor and deserving of our vote. I'm voting for Brian McGarry on Nov. 3. I encourage you to give him the same chance. Noreen Egan Rotterdam

Don’t let Rotterdam ‘dirty’ politics take over completely
As residents of Rotterdam for over 10 years our education of the nature of politics in this town has revealed something of what the country is opening its eyes to for perhaps the first time — that the differences between political parties is truly scant, particularly in the way that business is conducted. The same back room dealings and back scratching occur on both sides of the political aisle, with the end result being that the middle-class taxpayer is squeezed again and again with no end in sight. Both parties have called themselves “conservatives,” even running on the conservative line without a conservative bone in their body. Where is the Rotterdam voter to turn to when we have seen our property taxes nearly double while our homes are worth $20 to 30,000 less than their “full assessed value,” a tax restructuring program which was initiated by the current town administration? Look to the candidate with deeper roots in integrity and a vested interested in leading us on a fiscally sound path. He is your neighbor, subject to the same monetary mismanagement as you and we are. He dares to say “no more tax hikes” in the nick of time, before some of us have to begin to put our homes on the market. Before we go the way of the city of Schenectady, where falling property values can’t seem to attract enough buyers willing to pay their taxes, look to the kind of candidate you would want to keep our fiscal future in responsible hands. We cannot speak more highly of this individual’s moral character and willingness to serve our community. He is very unconnected from the political dealings that have gone on far too long in our town. We have a chance to do some “fall cleaning” and head into a new opportunity for Rotterdam’s future. Look to Mr. Brian McGarry for town supervisor. Vote Row F on the “No New Tax” line. Exactly! VOTE ROW F ONLY AND ALL THE WAY!!!! Our eyes are open now and we do have another choice besides these major, pandering political parties.

I'm not voting for McGarry for the same reason I'm not voting for FDG. He's insulated. Sure, he's walking door-to-door, but with NO SUBSTANCE.
Q: How are you going lower taxes, and continue to provide services? Brad: Thoughtful, Informed Answer. Mike: Thoughtful, Informed Answer. Mertz: Thoughtful, Informed Answer. McGarry: "Government doesn't do things cost-effectively...I don't know specifically."
I'm tired of him riding on the coattails of the others. It's apparent that he was a late bloomer anyway. Brad, Mike and John are doing this right...McGarry is along for the ride.

You said it.....Is McGarry part of the 'good 'ole boys and girls club'?????
as for the services....what are we realistically going to get rid of.....THAT is the bottom line....
we cant just keep gathering $$ from friends neighbors and businesses to provide for 'maid services'... and this isn't just in town.....is McGarry willing to enter the bull ring to fight.....remember it's the levy from the feds to the state to the county to the town......we cant push up....we have to pull down.....
PULL THE LEVER AGAINST THE LEVY-----VOTE ROW F-----ALL THE WAY........

Why vote against McGarry?? Because he stood up for decency and ethics regarding FDG? It's Mertz who is a drag on the ticket. O'Connor is fine and certainly a much better choice than the madman of the Legislature. Littlefield is excellent. You all are sour grapes. BT and TBV are probably the same people.
And for those of you who questioned FDG--he was great tonight and on message. He's polling way ahead of Steverino. Matt Martin also very bright, young and energetic. You Reps are facing a huge challenge. Dems may swseep--if not, McGarry will be sitting in Town Hall and Steverino and Surprise will have to be the doormen. Reps are out of this race. Thank Parisi and Buchanan.
