Quoted Text
I know that I am delivering the poor bastards into slavery, and that's all there is to it. And they know it, too. But they know that I'll have to throw them a crumb once in a while, if I want to keep my racket, while with the rest of you they wouldn't have a chance in hell. So that's why, if they've got to be under a whip, they'd rather I held it, not you-you drooling, tear-jerking, mealy-mouthed bastards of the public welfare!

If all these people have all the answers to what's wrong with the town and are convinced they'll work, how come we never hear from them or their actual ideas/plans at bored meetings, public forums, editorials, etc?
I mean, if they're so great, why wait till election time? I would think if you're a business man, and you've got a sure fire idea that can "fix" what's broken - why not bring it up a year or two or 6 before you decide to run for election? Bring them to the table - let's hear them - let's consider them.
So far, I've seen none of the candidates do that.
Interesting comment.
I chose to get involved this election as a candidate because I've been doing exactly what you suggest for the last 6 years with limited results. I attended and spoke at many, many Town Board meetings and Planning Commission meetings on many different issues that revolved around comprehensive planning, infrastructure, and the budget. I didn't just complain either. I tried to be constructive and offer some ideas too. I wrote letters to the editor, posted my views to earlier incarnations of this forum, and to my own blog. All of it is a matter of public record for those that take the time to seek it out. Many of the things I've addressed over the years from the sidelines remain unaddressed or unfinished. That doesn't make anyone evil. I just believe we need to do better.
Brad Littlefield advocated for a Metroplex audit long before he was ever a candidate for office. I have often seen Bob Godlewski offer his views at Town Board meetings. The No New Tax Party candidates all spoke out at the recent tax district public hearing. Many ordinary people who aren't candidates do what you indicated too.
But for an idea to get traction, someone has to listen to it when it gets voiced. That doesn't always happen in government unfortunately. Good ideas are overlooked or ignored all the time. The ordinary people offering them either get fed up and go away...or they decide to become candidates themselves to ask for the opportunity to advance the ideas. The latter is happening this year as evidenced by the crowded field.
One last thing...I don't ever claim to have all the answers. I think I may have a few, however.
Michael is a class act and WILL be sitting on the town board come January!
