The brother who ran the Rotterdam store closed it ,  But there is still an Alfreds on Glenridge Rd. in the Glenridge Plaza. Run by the older brother.  Its called Alfred's Baking Company. The  Glenville store is more like Alfred's used to be. It has all the original products and makes there famous whip cream cakes.Give them a call at 384-2696  open tues-sat  10-7

That's too bad, I wouldn't go all the way to Glenville for it. It was good, but unless I'm out in Glenville (rare) I wouldn't make a special trip.

Neither would I.

Alfred's closing has got to be a "war against babka."

We used to go to White Eagle to get the Easter bread at Easter.

White Eagle closed and we were buying it at their son's shop on Upper Union St.

The son's shop closed and we were buying it at some little convenience store on, oh, I can't remember which street, Princetown Rd or Mariaville Rd, maybe 2 or 3 blocks from 5 corners.  The son was baking over there and we got our babka from there.

Then that store closed (as we knew it), well, got bought by some mid-east or maybe Guyana, whatever.  So we started buying it at Alfreds, rumor has it "White Eagle's son" was making it for Alfreds too.

And now Alfred's has closed.

Alfred's always made there own bobka, I know this because I work for the glenville store.  The recipe was handed down from Alfred himself who was a european certified master baker. So lets put that rumor to rest.  Bobka is still avalible at the glenville store fridays and saturdays. And its only a 10 minute drive from the old store

Scotia and Glenville is not far just a little "out of the way" for us Rotterdamians! But if you ask some Rotterdamians, anywhere that is not mid-town Rotterdam is as far as Siberia to them, folks like my Mom!!! I mentioned a place in Clifton Park to a friend of mine once, as the only place one could purchase such and such- an item which he needed maybe once per year, and he said in disbelief  "ALL THE WAY UP THERE???????"

I, like many other have cut way back on driving to save gas (screw Obama and OPEC), so I make stops like that on a planned route where I go to 3 or 4 different joints for certain things in a circuit, taking care of all needs with one swoop!

As far as Babka-Mt. Pleasant Bakery still has it around Easter. Alfred's will be greatly missed for their cakes.  The closure of White Eagle was a huge loss. Chris's Bakery on Northside is also shut. Another pizzeria? Hopefully, they will be thin crust Napoli style. And yes, this does matter. Bakeries and all small business are being crushed by these tax and spend cheer leaders.

Found this out recently about Mt. Pleasant-Death Ray has been after them to relocate Downtown! These Krat morons won't be happy until Crane St is completely empty of business. Another lower State St. At what point do the sheeple get fired up about this Metrograft taxpayer ripoff? When's the latest opening date for Big Hose?

Thank you bakerman.  I must say that the babka at White Eagle and the one at Alfreds, they weren't really all that different.  The loaf from Alfreds was a bit smaller size, but actually, when we had gone to the place on Upper Union st, the loaf was smaller than his parents made at White Eagle
