Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons denies pair’s prom; reason unclear
Friday, May 15, 2009

Gazette Reporter

SCHENECTADY — Schenectady High School senior Ashley Civitello passed up the opportunity to go to her own prom last week because she was planning to go to her boyfriend’s prom at Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons High School.
She bought a red glittery dress and flowers and was supposed to be getting her hair and nails done today before attending the prom.
But there’s just one problem: The school says she can’t go.
“I was mad and I wanted to know why I couldn’t go, and they had no explanation,” she said.
Guests who do not attend the school are required to fill out permission slips from their parents and get approval from their own school’s administrator. She completed the paperwork, and on May 7, ND-BG officials informed the couple of their decision.
Civitello said she has no idea why they are doing this. She is in good standing at her school, she said.
“There was nothing in my file about any disciplinary thing,” she said.
She also said school officials should have told her of the decision sooner — not a week before the prom..........>>>>>>.........>>>.......http://www.dailygazette.com/news/2009/may/15/0515_promgirl/

since it is a private school it can do what it wants.....however, the "church" must have a reasoning reason, yes?

it's just a prom.....take the night and go somewhere else....

I agree. But as a parent, I would still want to know why.

Perhaps the school has false information.
Perhaps the kid 'has' done something the parents are unaware of and 'should' know.

And who is to say that a school is 'credible' anymore? Private or not!

ND-BG’s prom ruling was unwarranted and hurtful

Re May 15 article, “School denies pair’s prom; reason unclear”: What could possibly be acceptable about the horrendous decision made by the principal at Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons to deny that young couple admission to the student’s own prom with the guest he chose to bring?
What was he trying to accomplish by exhibiting his authority in such a negative and damaging way? I can tell you what he did accomplish, however. He took away a meaningful milestone that all high school students look forward to. He left them with a very sad memory that will stay with them forever. It will never go away. He caused much sadness and embarrassment.
It’s difficult to believe someone so out of touch with young people’s thoughts and feelings would have been destroyed with a simple no.
Also, I’m sure it will make parents think twice before choosing ND-BG as their choice to mold their young people.

Criticism of ND-BG principal unwarranted

Re Virginia Catalfamo’s May 23 letter, [“ND-BG’s prom ruling was unwarranted and hurtful”]:
Ms. Catalfamo stated that Principal Michael Piatek was “out of touch with young people’s thoughts and feelings.” This statement can’t be any further from the truth.
Mr. Piatek is one of the few principals I’ve had the pleasure of working with who is in touch with young people’s thoughts and feelings because he is a husband, father and grandfather. He knows kids and has their best interest at heart. He has proven this over and over again in his tenure at Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons.
The reasons for his decision cannot and will not be made public because he has integrity and is the ultimate professional. As a teacher and parent of a former ND-BG student, I would choose this school again to help my husband and I “mold” our child.
