GLENVILLE
Funds sought to redevelop old Kmart site
Metroplex to apply for $750,000 in state money for Route 50 site
BY MICHAEL GOOT Gazette Reporter

Metroplex Development Authority is seeking a federal Restore NY grant funding to revitalize the old Kmart plaza — vacant for nearly three years.
Sue Lombardi, grant writer for Glenville, said a pool of $150 million of funding is available to demolish and redevelop vacant properties. The money is distributed to communities based on size and Glenville can put in one application for up to $2.5 million.
Lombardi said it plans to put in for a $750,000 request to rehabilitate the Kmart site on Route 50, which has been vacant since the Kmart closed in August 2006. The parcel is owned by HSS Realty Inc.
The grant requires a 10 percent match from the municipality — either as money or in-kind services. The owner of the property would also have to be on board.
“This would not be to cover the construction of a new building. This would be to leverage funds for private investment,” she said.
The application is due May 4 so Metroplex is moving forward with the process. Lombardi said the next step would be to schedule a public hearing. In addition, the application would need an affidavit from the owner giving the town permission to apply.
Town Administrator Tony Germano said there have been some preliminary conversations on the matter with RD Management LLC.
“I don’t think the owner has committed yet, but is aware,” he said.
Supervisor Frank Quinn said that he believes there is still much interest in the property and one of the interested parties is Target. Last year, the retailer confirmed that it was interested in developing in the town, but did not discuss specifi c sites.
Board member Chris Koetzle said he believes the property should be redeveloped into more of a pedestrian-friendly shopping plaza with more green space. This would fi t the area especially since New York Development Group proposes to build about 250,000 square feet of commercial space and residential condominiums on a 39-acre parcel located behind the town’s municipal center on Glenridge Road.

WHAT? First off, why isn't Glenville applying for this grant themselves? Why is the plex involved? And second, why isn't the plex applying for this grant for the Curry Road shopping center in Rotterdam that has been in need for decades?

And not to mention, that even though I am against the plex, don't they have millions of their own from 'our taxes'? Why aren't they using that?

None of this makes any sense at all! no sense = nonsense!

Everytime Metrograft gets involved in something it totally bombs. They took over St James Plaza in Nisky and what happened? More stores left. Has the Big Hose opened yet? Hey Gazetto-How about a tenth possible opening date?

And don't forget according to 5 separate Gazetto "news stories" the Y might, possibly, is considering, maybe coming to the Krat white elephant Centre City. Oh joy, oh rapture. 10 new minumum wage jobs!

This is a total distration from Death Ray's complete failure to sign anyone to Clinton's Square aka {Ditch II}. Or Gillen's Gulch {aka Robinson's Square}.

Sorry, but I don't believe in taxpayers paying for a private entity. That is NOT capitalism. I hope that when the guy/guys/girls who purchased the grand union building,  weren't planning that the taxpayers would fix it up so they could make a profit.
