Retailers should go back to closing on Sundays

   I think it would be good go back to the old “blue laws” days, when retail stores were closed on Sundays.
    Stores operating on such slim margins would be able to save money on utilities, shipping costs and overhead. Employees would get a day off to rest, recoup and recreate, cut commuting costs and save some energy. Perhaps this might actually generate more business on Saturday — plus during midweek, when consumers know they have to get their shopping done. Wages could increase if overhead costs from being open on Sunday were lessened.
    Consumers would now likely have more money and time to spend it on other days. Perhaps a little downtime per week is what’s needed to get us back on track with a healthier way of life. How much of a sacrifice would this day off from shopping really be?

Great letter from Mr. Semple. What retailers found out is that Sunday openings have just taken sales from other days of the week. It hasn't added anything to the bottom line.

    Unfortunately this horrible State is moving in the opposite direction. They want to open up OTB's on Palm Sunday. Like this will help the record State deficit? Nothing is sacred. The usual short sightedness from Albany politicos.

With stores open on Thanksgiving day (not just supermarkets, but the department stores as well, we shouldn't be surprised if stores opened on Christmas Day.

I too believe that purchases are done on Sunday instead of the other days as opposed to people buy more.

Inasmuch as we go to church on Sundays (or Saturday vigil if need be), I will stay away from using the "keep holy the sabbath" as the reason for stores to be closed and instead suggest that it be a day of relaxing, enjoying yourself, and more importantly spending with family.  In the olden days families went to grandma and grandpa's on Sundays, all the aunties and uncles and cousins under one roof.  Big family picnics in the summer.  Today, I'd bet that in many families the first cousins don't even know each other.  Of course, Walmart would be opposed to doing anything like this, they are too greedy.

Now, here's a thought.  How about if TV's stopped broadcasting from noon til 6 pn on Sundays?   WAIT, I can't do without watching the Nascar race and baseball.  

MC, I agree. But being the devil's advocate here......Businesses started to do business on Sunday. The businesses or government laws can hardly be the cause and effect here. And why? Cause the sheople love going shopping on Sunday. There clearly was a need and the businesses filled it.

On the flip side and to your case MC, the days of family picnics and get togethers are a thing of the past. Almost too boring to be bothered with. Not to mention, sheople are just too busy these days. (doing what?)

AND with more women in the work force, the only days to buy needed supplies falls on the weekends. Anyone been to the markets on Sat and Sun? It's packed.

As far as the sheople going to church....it appears that the sheople are even too busy to go there.  

How about a unique and novel idea! Give the stores and the workers THE FREEDOM TO CHOOSE WHEN THEY WILL BE OPEN kind of what you might expect in a free country!!!! The consumers can then choose if they want to and need to shop on that day. This used to be a place called America, once, anyway.

Maybe Sundays became "charge it" day......temptation is all around us......those devilish endcap sales and the crap we fill our homes and landfills with
China loves Sundays as "charge it" days.........
