I am wondering what has become of good and honorable American citizens who once exhibited caring for others and pride in themselves?  Folks who volunteered their time to support worthy causes rather than advocate for the creation of a paid government agency to do what individuals once did.  People who gave generously of their own hard earned money to charitable causes rather than pass government policies by which others' money was taken from them and redistributed to causes deemed politically correct.  Proud individuals who provided for themselves and their families rather than look to the pandering bureaucrats for government assistance?

We often hear of the severe need for volunteers to support local organizations.  Seemingly, few answer the call.  Church membership is reportedly in decline.

When I become disillusioned about the state of our society, I look to several shining examples that restore my faith in the human race.  The first is of the fine men and women in our nation's military who give selflessly of themselves and place themselves in harms way to protect and serve our nation.   To each of them goes my gratitude and respect.  We can never repay them for their sacrifice and that of their families.  

The second is a recent example about which I learned while attending church.  One of the senior church members became gravely ill and is at home on a ventilator.  She receives medical services from visiting nurses, but the cost of round-the-clock care is prohibitive.  A request was made by our Pastor for volunteers who could devote some of their time to visit the home to be with the ailing woman and her elderly husband.  One after another church members stepped forward.  At last count, there were over 20 individuals helping their fellow neighbors and church members with cooking, cleaning, etc.  More importantly, they devote their time simply to visit, to talk, and show that there are others who care.

At a time when our government "leaders" and the policies that they enact are failing the American people, we must each step forward to give of ourselves.  Each of us has a unique gift to share.  Won't you consider dedicating a few hours of your time each week to a worthy cause?  Giving this gift will benefit both the recipient and the giver.

I fear that we are being educated in schools, colleges, by unions, and the media to turn to the government as the answer to all of our problems and in the next 4 years we'll see how very bad this has been for our country. I agree with you Brad that right now very few people volunteer to help those in need and with the government removing religious symbols from schools and government buildings this situation will become much worse as time goes on.
