Obama orders thousands of U.S. troops to Afghanistan
Tue Feb 17, 2009 11:29pm GMT
By Andrew Gray

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama, in his first major military decision, has authorized the Pentagon to send an extra 17,000 troops to Afghanistan to tackle worsening insurgent violence, the White House said on Tuesday.

"This increase is necessary to stabilise a deteriorating situation in Afghanistan, which has not received the strategic attention, direction and resources it urgently requires," Obama said in a written statement.

As a presidential candidate, Obama promised to focus more attention on the war in Afghanistan, where Taliban militants and other insurgents have stepped up their campaign of violence in the past two years.

"The decision was communicated to the Pentagon yesterday. The orders were signed today," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters travelling with Obama in Denver.

The 17,000 troops include an Army brigade equipped with Stryker armoured vehicles, a Marine expeditionary brigade and support personnel, officials said.

The forces are part of an anticipated U.S. troop build-up that could expand the U.S. military presence in Afghanistan to 60,000 troops, from a current 38,000, in coming months.

There are also some 30,000 troops from NATO nations attempting to stabilise Afghanistan.

The announcement comes while the White House is still conducting a broad review of U.S. policy on Afghanistan.

The deployment provides two of three extra combat brigades requested by top U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan, Army General David McKiernan.

Most of the extra forces are expected to be sent to southern Afghanistan, where a shortage of U.S. and NATO troops face an intensifying Taliban insurgency.

Funny how the media isn't taking this story and running with it. Can anyone just imagine if this was McCain or Bush that sent more troops to Afganistan????? There would be a media hanging for sure!!!

The Iraq war will come to an end on Aug. 31, 2010, senior officials said, following President Obama's decision to end all counter-insurgency missions by that time.

Obama told top leaders in Congress on Thursday that he will  transition the mission in Iraq to training, advising and engaging in limited counter-terrorist operations, according to congressional sources.

The president is expected to deliver a speech Friday at the Marine base in Camp Lejeune, N.C, in which he will order the immediate drawdown of the 142,000 Marines and Army personnel in Iraq.

Obama unveils his Afghanistan strategy
President says U.S. must ‘disrupt, defeat and dismantle’ al-Qaida

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama on Friday ordered 4,000 more military troops into Afghanistan, vowing to "disrupt, dismantle and defeat" the terrorist al-Qaida network in Afghanistan and neighboring Pakistan.

In a war that still has no end in sight, Obama said the fresh infusion of U.S. forces is designed to bolster the Afghan army and turn up the heat on terrorists that he said are plotting new attacks against Americans. The plan takes aim at terrorist havens in Pakistan and challenges the government there and in Afghanistan to show more results.

Obama called the situation in the region "increasingly perilous" more than seven years after the Taliban was removed from power in.............................http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29898698/#storyContinued

Now, if I remember correctly, those critical of our military being in Iraq were going around saying that we have needs here in the U.S., people without health insurance for example, and that if we stopped paying for all this military stuff, there would be money to provide everyone with health insurance.  So, now, Obama is talking health insurance for everyone which costs money, he's spending billions in bailouts to rich companies and banks, and he's still spending money on military.

So, WHERE is the money coming from?

Something to ponder

Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent.
Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and
speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.

Obama is just spending money we don't have and in the end it will be someone else's problem on how to pay for all this out of control spending.

You were okey-doked again! As bad as his economic policy is, Obama's foreign policy is worse. He has already insulted Britian, the EU and China. His first call to a foreign "leader' was the the PLO murderer.

It was really funny to hear Hillary threaten N. Korea. Bill did absolutely nothing to them while they furthered their nuclear ambitions. Iran is on the verge of nuclear weapons and he removes sanctions on both Iran and Syria. Putting more troops into Afganistan is sheer folly. Both Russia and Britian lost there. We are going to see the long term consequences of pandering to Islamo-facists. Naive is one thing-this is quite another.

They will just dig farther into our pockets to pay for all of this 'stuff'. I say we all quit our jobs and go on public assistance. The only ones left would be the politicians. Let them pay for us all! nitwits!
