Postage to rise another 2 cents

    WASHINGTON — The post office will get an extra 2-cents worth when you mail a letter starting in May.
    The U.S. Postal Service announced Tuesday that the price of a first-class stamp will rise to 44 cents on May 11.
    That gives plenty of time to stock up on Forever Stamps, which will continue to sell at the current 42-cent rate until the increase occurs. They will remain valid in the future regardless of rate hikes.
    “The Postal Service is not immune to rising costs, which are affecting homes and businesses across America today,” said Postmaster General John Potter. “Even with the increases, the Postal Service continues to offer some of the lowest postage prices in the world.”

While I don't think that .45 is too high a price to pay for a letter to get from NY to CA, I do wonder what justifies the increase.

The USPS has proposed that mail delivery be ended on Saturdays.  I expect that this should reduce costs associated with personnel and equipment (vehicles).  There are also proposed post office closings including one in Quaker Street (in the Town of Duanesburg).  

I wonder if these cost savings are reflected in the estimates of projected costs that led to this increase in rates.

I heard it initially reported that they were proposing eliminating Saturday deliveries.  It was further stated that Tuesdays are the lightest delivery days.

I know some people who work for the post office and they said that Saturday was the day they were considering.

Hey, that's what we're all here for!

Actually, MT, I think you're right.  They were looking at Saturday at first glance, then someone got the idea (which, IF you're going to look at reducing the services, is a good idea) that they should pick the day of the week that they have the lowest volume of mail.  Upon further review, the Tuesday decision was rendered, as this was the lowest mail volume of the remaining days.

Does that mean there will be more crappy advertisements and bills on another day??? oh dear what about the political fliers....will they get a special
delivery day on Tuesday? "I'd gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today."-------
