Aide: Paterson picks Gillibrand as next NY senator
Aide: NY Gov. Paterson picks US Rep. Gillibrand to be next US senator, filling Clinton's seat

By MICHAEL GORMLEY, Associated Press
Last updated: 4:47 a.m., Friday, January 23, 2009

ALBANY -- Gov. David Paterson has picked Democratic U.S. Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand to fill New York's vacant U.S. Senate seat, an aide to the governor said early Friday, a day after Caroline Kennedy abruptly withdrew from consideration.

Gillibrand, a second-term lawmaker from upstate New York, will be named to fill the seat vacated when Hillary Rodham Clinton resigned to become secretary of state in the Obama administration, the aide said, speaking on condition of anonymity because an announcement hadn't been made. An announcement was scheduled for later Friday.

Gillibrand's office didn't immediately return a call seeking comment.

She was considered one of the top contenders in Paterson's selection process, along with Kennedy and state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo.

Paterson's appointment lasts until 2010, when a special election will be held to fill the final two years of Clinton's term.

Kennedy, the daughter of the late President John F. Kennedy, called the governor around midday Wednesday and told him she was having second thoughts about the job, according to a person close to Paterson, who said she later decided to remain in contention, only to announce her withdrawal early Thursday in an e-mail.

Others in the field, led by more senior politicians, including U.S. Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, criticized Gillibrand as recently as Thursday evening, saying her support of more conservative issues such as gun ownership rights was out of step with most New York Democrats.

But Gillibrand (JIL'-uh-brand) is ................http://timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyID=761424

Kirsten is a much better choice for Senator than Caroline was, at least she knows where Syracuse is IMHO.

I wonder if her "conservative" i.e. American views on "gun ownership" will change?

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

She's about as Conservative as Moms Mabley. This just: In Jimmy Tedisco has announced his intention to run for her Congressional Seat. He has the endorsement of the Saratoga County Chairman. This is causing a chain reaction as many are looking at his Assembly seat. As far as Kristin G. good luck-she will need it to win a Dem primary. Better than Kennedy? How low can you set the bar?

'How low can we set the bar?' You are kidding right? There is no bar. It is no longer 'what you know or serve'....it is now 'who you know and serve'. And IF Gillibrand stays true to her upstate ideals, we will have a shot. If the downstate, out of touch with upstate politicians sway her their way....we will be SOL!!

And remember, it was obama who encouraged Kennedy to put her name in the hat for the senate seat. What could he have been thinking.

Oh and Fred Dicker (NYT) was on O'Rielly (FOX) last night. He was great as usual and O'Rielly tried to do all the talking...as usual!

Fred Dicker is State Editor for the NY Post-not Times. "Upstate values" what a joke. A political insider, negative mud thrower, who was never challenged. Instead of umm, eh, ahh, every sentence you get "family" every sentence. Schumer and Hillary got their way. Schumer wanted a nobody. He is tired of playing second fiddle. Don't cross Hillary.

Gov Patterson is the real loser here. This guy has upset the Kennedy's, upset President Obama and can't make a decision. After months this is the best choice? The people wanted Andrew Cuomo. The real winner here is the State GOP. Both Patterson and Kristen G. are very weak candidates. Jimmy T will take the Congressional seat in a cake walk.

I really don't know if Cuomo would have been the best choice. Heck, I don't even know if Gillibrand will be. BUT...this is about the only upstate input we have. Cuomo is lock step with the downstate dems. And he is doing a fine job right where he is now. And Cuomo will have a more extensive political future for sure!

But you are absolutely correct Benny about Paterson pissing obama and the kennedy's off with this decision. Time will tell if Gillibrand can make the grade.

Gillibrand begins statewide tour
Gun issue highlights conflicts as she broadens turf
BY VERENA DOBNIK The Associated Press

NEW YORK — Senator-designate Kirsten Gillibrand started her statewide “listening tour” Saturday in the urban heart of Harlem — far from the upstate farmlands she represented as a congresswoman.
A day after Gov. David Paterson named the centrist Democrat to fill Hillary Rodham Clinton’s empty Senate seat, Gillibrand began introducing herself to her new downstate constituents by appearing at a weekly rally held by the Rev. Al Sharpton.
Sharpton introduced her to the crowd by making note of their political differences. Among other things, Gillibrand has a record of opposing gun control. Her votes in Congress earned her a 100 percent rating from the National Rifle Association.
But Gillibrand, showing political aplomb, looked for common ground and quickly found it: disgust with Wall Street and the sinking economy.
“It’s a very serious and sad time,” she told the audience. “Every time you hear about what’s happening to these financial institutions, the first thing you’re reading is the number of layoffs. And the layoffs are the people from this community.”
She told the crowd that her “No. 1 issue” is the economy, and that she’ll tackle it using her 15 years of experience as a securities lawyer on Wall Street.
STREET GUN ISSUE
When pressed on guns, Gillibrand, who comes from a family of hunters, expressed flexibility. She said she was willing to meet with anti-violence groups and listen to what they had to say.
When asked whether there might be NRA positions on gun ownership that contradict the gun-control needs of an inner-city community like Harlem, she said, “There might well be,” adding, “I’ll look into it.”
She also promised to look into another issue painful to Harlem residents: racial profiling.
One audience member, Harlem bus driver Elizabeth Wilson, said police near her home in Beacon routinely stop her college student son while he’s driving and demand his ID. Beacon is about 50 miles north of New York City.
“I can now go and meet the police forces up there, and I can tell them your experience and say, ’This has to change,’” Gillibrand told Wilson.
Another woman, Sandra Mitchell, said she wanted to start her own small business but couldn’t get a loan.
Gillibrand said Mitchell’s experience showed how the economic crisis is affecting “all of us. The banks ... are hoarding cash. And they are using the federal bailout money to make more money.”
The senator-designate left with a standing ovation.
The visit was part of a get-toknow-you tour by the 42-year-old, second-term congresswoman who will be the Senate’s youngest member.
After the rally, Gillibrand attended a forum in Queens hosted by U.S. Rep. Gregory Meeks, a Queens Democrat, and state Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith. She also met Saturday with U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel.
She was to be sworn in on Sunday.

Lets hope that Gillibrand can retain her upstate conservative values/views. I hope that she can 'compromise' while not sacrificing her principles or values!

Maybe we can get Kirsten to come to Rotterdam.  It's not THAT far from her home, then we can tell her what WE think she should be representing...or are we just nobodys from nowhere...sort of what she was when SHE first ran for and got her House seat.
