All Schenectadians must work together to fix their city

    President Obama. Yes, it sounds different, and there is something different going on here.
    As a biracial woman whose mother is Caucasian and father African-American, whose ancestors were involved in World War II on the wrong side, I feel the deep shame of my ancestors — just as a white person feels today about slavery. That was in the past, and you and I didn’t have a hand in it.
    I have seven children and I tell them to work hard — no one owes you anything. So I am saying to the African-American people of Schenectady, stand up and know you are equal as human beings, take advantage of what Dr. Martin Luther King started and what President Obama is finishing. Check your character and morals. If you are not respecting yourself, how do you expect other people to respect you? Rebuild your self-esteem — you do not need expensive clothes and jewelry to validate your worth.
    Be a productive member of society. That is what our ancestors wanted for us, just a chance to be treated equally. The era of the white man holding you back is over. Demand respect by showing respect. Take care of your kids. Be a good example to them. Kids learn what they live. Dads: If you are getting high, hanging out and wasting time away, not being productive, going to jail, what do you expect your sons to do?
    Moms, if you are hopping from man to man, getting STDs and having babies, and you are not providing for them, what do you think your daughters would do? Why does this city have such a high HIV/AIDS rate? It is a small city. The cycle has to stop somewhere.
    Schenectady can be a great place to live if we all stand up and be responsible and help each other. Let’s make that change starting here. Let’s rebuild this town together, clean up the streets, the corruption. Let’s be a real community.

The era of the white man holding you back is over.

Ann, this era has been over for a very long time. The NAACP and Affirmative action can and should be dissolved NOW!! Both organizations have been around for decades and it's dreams have now come to fruition.

The whites for years have NOT been holding back the blacks. Some blacks however want to make people think otherwise. They keep bringing up the 50s and 60s and although there were obvious injustices done to the blacks...that was over 40years ago.

Everything Ann says is true....it's time!!
