Planned power outage targets eastern Otsego County towns

National Grid expects to cut electric power to about 3,000 customers in several Otsego County towns just west of Schoharie County for up to three hours this evening to fix equipment problems.

The towns affected are Worcester, Decatur and Schenevus. Customers were notified by automated phone calls this afternoon that the power would be cut at 4 p.m., with restoration sometime before 7 p.m.

"We were doing some line inspections in that area and we found some equipment that needed to be fixed," said National Grid spokesman Patrick Stella.

Temperatures in the area are expected to go down to about 2 degrees below zero tonight, according the National Weather Service, with even colder temperatures Thursday.

"We felt we needed to do the work before it got even colder," Stella ... continued at http://dailygazette.com/news/2009/jan/14/0114_outage/.

I thought I'd spit my adult drink out when I read this line. Did they know it was 2 DEGREES BELOW ZERO NOW!!!!

But here is my question....why from 4pm to 7pm.Now unless they have 1st 2nd and 3rd shift workers, this would be considered OT, right? And why didn't they do it during the earlier part of the day?

and why did they only give them 2hrs notice? Nobody's home during the day, everyone's working - or out usually during the day. 4-7 pm is when people are getting home, trying to fix dinner, and warm up their houses for the night.

Fortunately, I would IMAGINE a lot use wood stoves or propane out in that area for heat - but still, I'd consider this rather extreme. A FEW more hours notice would have been nice
