If the town is the last ones to put their seal of approval on any new developments, there should be papers drawn up making the town totally responsible for any future problems. Rotterdam can not continually make these developmental mistakes that impact the residence. How many more failed developments can this town take? If Tommasone wants to keep the seat he presently sits in, I hope he changes direction where development is concerned.

Once again the Rotterdam Town Board, at its Feb. 25 meeting, backed the decision of the Planning Commission to approve a zoning change requested by Amedore Builders, despite much citizen protest [March 3 Gazette]! This same process allowed Amedore to replace one home on a wooded fouracre lot after clear-cutting the trees and filling in acres of wetlands all in the secondary aquifer overlay zone, with 52 condos called Putnam Woods. Even those condo owners are protesting the zoning change! The wooded lot in question is landlocked behind a house vacated due to massive damage during the condo building. The lot is the size required for a two-bedroom home, not the large two-family house Amedore hopes to build! And then the tale gets dirty! The “state of the art” septic system in reality is a very large, well-disguised aboveground tank adjacent to the proposed duplex’s driveway off Putnam Road. The contents of that tank are pumped underground to the holding tank built by Wilmorite for the 74 stores their permit allowed. Trouble was, they built 104 stores and then added more. Also feeding into this tank are the Edison Senior Apartments, all of the BJ/Office Max complex and Burger King. We have been told it has been “upgraded.” Yes, it has a history of exploding and backing up! Living just above the Great Flats might be considered country living by some, with the displaced wildlife nibbling your landscaping and taking over any enclosed space, but the fact is the mosquito count for the county is highest in the area just below Putnam Woods.

ROTTERDAM — Rotterdam officials decided against a zoning change that would have allowed Amedore Homes to build a fourbedroom duplex off Putnam Road between a condominium complex the company built and the former home of Aaron Mair. Supervisor Steve Tommasone and Town Board member Joe Signore both voted against changing the property’s zoning from agricultural to two-family residential. Board member Michael Della Villa voted in favor of the project, while John Mertz recused himself because of his job as counsel to state Assemblyman George Amedore Jr., the son of the company’s president. Newly installed member Stanley Marchinkowski abstained. Marchinkowski, a former member of the town’s Zoning Board of Appeals, wasn’t sure whether to support the project. He said opponents to Amedore Homes’ proposal could one day find themselves facing another type of development on the property — such as an in-law apartment — if the company were granted a variance. “I needed to hear what both sides have to say,” he said following the vote. But for the time being, Amedore Homes will be unable to develop the roughly 0.65-acre property it acquired from Mair following an out-of-court settlement in October. Mair filed a lawsuit against the company over being denied the rights to an easement he had along what is now Annabelle Place, the privately maintained access road to Putnam Woods. Several residents along Putnam Road and in Putnam Woods argued against the zoning change, suggesting the duplex would create a number of problems. Some said developing the property would exacerbate the groundwater problems they’re already experiencing, while others indicated the lot size is too small for the type of building the company proposed. Originally, the zone change was listed for approval on the board’s posted agenda. The resolution angered zoning change opponents, some of whom turned out for Wednesday’s meeting to voice their discontent. “Since I’m a resident and it’s going to negatively affect me, I want figure out who I should vote for in this year’s election,” warned Patricia-Anne Green-Dehn, a Putnam Road homeowner and one of the most vocal opponents of the change. With exception to Della Villa’s seat, every board position is up for re-election this year. Tommasone, Signore and Marchinkowski were all recently endorsed for reelection by the town’s Republican Committee.
