Storms to bring minor snowfalls after mild spell

Two storm systems are closing in on the region leading up to New Year's Eve, according to the National Weather Service.
But neither storm — the first starting this evening, the second beginning late Tuesday and stretching into Wednesday — is expected to bring much snowfall, said Kimberly Sutkevich, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Albany.
This evening's fast-moving storm follows a weekend of above-normal temperatures, which crept into the upper 50s Sunday afternoon but failed eclipse the record of 61º set in 1982, according to weather service records. The normal high is 33º.
High winds followed the warm temperatures Sunday a cold front rolled in, Suketvich said, prompting forecasters to issue a wind advisory.
Several hundred homes and businesses in Albany and Colonie lost power Sunday afternoon after a tree limb fell on a power line in Colonie, said Courtney Quatrino, a spokeswoman for National Grid. Those outages, which included several Latham traffic signals, were repaired in less than two hours, she said.
National Grid also blamed high winds for outages in the Warrensburg area.
Sutkevich said tonight's storm is expected to begin around 6 p.m. and could bring up to a half-inch of snow to the valleys and as much as 2 inches in the Adirondacks before tailing off around 7 or 8 a.m. Tuesday.
Snow is expected to begin again after midnight Tuesday, changing to rain between late morning and midafternoon, then back to snow in late afternoon as revelers head out to celebrate New Year's Eve.
"We're not looking at any significant snowfall amounts," Sutkevich said, "maybe an inch to three by the time it's done."
