I don't know what effect the unauthorized release of Lazzari's personnel records had on the election results.
I am only suggesting that DA Carney may be too close to the situation for him to objectively assess whether or not a crime was committed. It is in his interests that the investigation be referred to the FBI. In his position of District Attorney, Mr. Carney must ensure that he is perceived by the public as fair and just.
I agree with you 100%. You need a special investigator for this. Not sure either how it affected the race. But it was totally unfair to do to Joe Lazzari and I don't care WHO did Rep or Dem. It's also not fair to steal candidates signs--although that is innocuous as compared to commiting a criminal act of revealing sealed records. And BTW there was nothing there of note. But it should have turned that election on its head. No Carney is not the one who should be pursuing this. Agreed.
As I recall there was something similar done during the Conservative Party Committee Elections last year to discredit an opponent by releasing alleged protected and private information in an attempt to discredit the individual. That mailer was sent to rank and file enrolled Conservatives from an anonymous source.
Seems to be the modus operandi of some engaged in Schenectady County politics. Would be nice if elections were about issues and qualifications, rather than personal destruction.

SCHENECTADY COUNTY Dagostino outlines his priorities as new sheriff BY STEVEN COOK Gazette Reporter Reach Gazette reporter Steven Cook at 395-3122 or scook@dailygazette.net.
The new sheriff on Friday said he intends to move quickly to implement programs talked about in the campaign. Those programs include accreditation for the department, compliance with staffing mandates and programs aimed at making elderly and teenage residents safer. “We have to stop talking about it and start rolling up our sleeves and get to work,” Dominic Dagostino told an overflow crowd at the Schenectady County Public Library. Dagostino was sworn in Friday as the county’s new sheriff, taking over for interim-sheriff Gordon Pollard, who himself took over after Sheriff Harry Buffardi left early last year. Pollard is staying on in his old post as undersheriff. Dagostino, a Conservative who ran for the post with Democratic backing, won the November election, defeating challenger Joseph Lazzari by more than 1,000 votes. A crowd approaching 200 watched as county Legislator Karen Johnson swore in the new sheriff. Johnson, Dagostino noted, was an important part of his campaign, taking an “introverted kid” and getting him out shaking hands. “I have such an admiration for this man,” Johnson said before having Dagostino recite the oath of office, “his energy, the things I learned about him, the respect he has in the police community.” The crowd in the library’s McChesney Room included family, friends and supporters, as well as local dignitaries and department employees. Opening the ceremonies was Dagostino’s old boss, Rotterdam Police Chief James Hamilton. The chief told of knowing Dagostino for 20 years. They attended the police academy together. Dagostino was a lieutenant with Rotterdam. The position of sheriff is an important one, Hamilton said, because the sheriff has to work well with other law enforcement. “I know Dom has demonstrated that ability over the years and I couldn’t be prouder to be here today seeing him sworn in as the next sheriff,” Hamilton said. In his remarks, the new sheriff noted Rotterdam is the only department in the county that has been accredited. He has said accreditation would provide further professionalism and improve morale of the staff. .............>>>>..................>>>>.........................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01001&AppName=1

He said he intends to implement a countywide “Good Morning, Neighbor” program for elderly residents, similar to one in place in Rotterdam. Residents could sign up for daily calls to make sure they’re OK. If there’s no response to a computer-generated call, administrators would follow up with a contact list and would ultimately send a patrol car to check on the resident.

Wait, we don't have enough cops/patrols to watch our streets - we gotta call in (and pay dearly for) the state police .. but we can use officers to do "check the welfare" calls?
Ya, ok - that's not really making me feel secure. "Sorry dispatch, I can't check on that stolen vehicle / shooting / stabbing / robbery, I gotta check the welfare of someone who may be in the shower".

This is just the wrong way to involve the government in our lives.....the next generation will just accept it as "1984"----- I'm glad he has a big heart....but to use elderly and kids as podium pucks is wrong......JMHO.......
it's a volunteer version of "show me your papers".....the teenage drivers will need a "RealID" to have this 'tracking' done for their parents....I thought that was what cell phones were for????? Not only that why involve the police as a welcome force in your personal family matters???? AHHHHH,,,,this,,,is,,,America......wasn't it?????

I couldn't agree with you more here! God only knows that schenectady county has more than we need 'non-profits'. Let them do the job if they feel it is really that necessary. Hell, while they're at it, why not make daily calls to the folks in a drug/alcohol program and make sure they're still clean. How 'bout wake up calls to all of us who need to get up to go to work? Ya know...the wake up alarm clock call.
Crime is rampant and the first 'feel good' thing from dago is wake up calls to seniors? Ya just can't make this stuff up!

Doesn't make sense. Might the Sheriff have foreseen or been forewarned of law enforcement consolidation plans by the Democratic majority in county government? First dispatch, then command and patrol?

SCHENECTADY COUNTY GOP eyes two for sheriff run Ex-city chief Moffett among those courted BY MICHAEL LAMENDOLA Gazette Reporter
Schenectady County Republicans are courting two former police officers to be their candidate to succeed longtime Sheriff Harry Buffardi, who has said he will resign to become a professor at Schenectady County Community College. Republicans are courting Michael Moffett, an excity police chief and currently an investigator with the state Department of Health. Moffett challenged Buffardi in 2006, losing by 10,000 votes. Republicans also said Tom Constantine, a retired Niskayuna police officer, would give them a strong ticket and help them capture seats from Democrats on the county Legislature next year. Constantine’s father, also Tom, is a former head of the federal Drug Enforcement Administration and a former superintendent of the state police. Neither Constantine nor Moffett were available for comment. County Democrats said they are not worried about losing the sheriff’s seat, nor seats on the county Legislature. A Democrat has been sheriff for at least 18 years. In 2009, seven seats are in play on the county Legislature — six are held by Democrats and one by a Republican. Democrats currently have an 11-4 majority. Buffardi, who has been sheriff for 10 years, said he will become a full-time assistant professor at Schenectady County Community College next year. He has not set a date for his resignation and is expected to begin teaching classes in criminal justice after Jan. 12. He has taught criminal justice part time at the college for 14 years, he said. Once Buffardi resigns, Gov. David Paterson will set the date of a special election and will appoint an interim sheriff until then, local offi - cials said. If Buffardi resigns before Sept. 20, the election will be held in 2009; if later, then November 2010. County Republican Chairman Tom Buchanan said Buffardi’s departure presents the party with an “overwhelming opportunity.” If the election is held next year and Republicans are able to get a strong name to lead the ticket, they see the countywide sheriff’s race as winnable and also see an ability to come close if not overtake the Democrats on the county Legislature. “You don’t get opportunities like this all the time,” Buchanan said. County Democratic Committee Chairman Brian Quail said the party has started the process to fi nd a successor to Buffardi. “The committee will interview perspective candidates and ultimately make an endorsement for whatever special election the governor calls,” he said. Quail said “There are a lot of people who have credentials” for the position. I am not going to speculate at this point because people who are interested will come forward.” Quail said he remains confident a Democrat will retain the sheriff’s seat and that Democrats will also take the seat now held by Republican Joe Suhrada of Rotterdam. Suhrada’s term expires next year. “While you can’t take anything for granted, our enrollment advantage is the highest ever,” Quail said. The Democratic enrollment went from 35 percent of the electorate in 2004 to 37 percent in 2008. Republican enrollment went from 33 percent to 30 percent during the same period. There are 35,854 Democrats versus 27,771 Republicans in the county, according to the county Board of Elections. Still, Quail said, the sheriff’s race has the potential to be tight. “We have to run a stellar candidate whose credentials are beyond reproach.
