I lived in Alabama where my property taxes were $750 per year. Here in New York they are $8,500 per year, with the bulk of that number being school taxes. What does all that money buy in New York vs. Alabama? Not much.
Alabama has a 62 percent graduation rate; New York a 70 percent graduation rate. Using this analysis, all that money has not led to much in terms of results.
The teachers in NYS get a high salary, great retirement pay, and excellent health-care benefits even if the people paying for all their benefits can't afford the same benefits for themselves.
