SCHENECTADY Handbook offers tips for the worst Information on disasters being sent to residents BY KATHLEEN MOORE Gazette Reporter Reach Gazette reporter Kathleen Moore at 395-3120 or moore@dailygazette.com.
If an earthquake ever hits Schenectady, residents will now know what to do. The city is mailing every resident an emergency handbook detailing precisely how to handle everything from terrorist attacks to winter storms. Public Safety Commissioner Wayne Bennett acknowledged that some of the topics in the book seem a little farfetched. “But believe it or not, New York state does get earthquakes,” he said. “This book was started before my time, but it was a good idea. People need to be educated before the crisis occurs — the learning curve shouldn’t begin when the crisis begins.” The handbook also encourages residents to create an emergency supply kit — rather than racing to the grocery store just before a blizzard — and design an evacuation plan so all family members can fi nd each other after a disaster. Mayor Brian U. Stratton urged residents to read the handbook and prepare for emergencies now. “Although it is everyone’s hope that a disaster or other emergency will never strike our homes or disrupt our lives, there can be no substitute for proper planning and preparation for the unexpected,” Stratton said. Bennett added that residents shouldn’t panic during an emergency if they feel they need far more information than their handbook provides. It gives just the first few basic steps for self-preservation. “Rest assured that the city is properly staffed to assist you beyond these.........................................................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....amp;EntityId=Ar01003

They are kidding here right? This information has been out in print and on the net since 9/11. I don't care how 'prepared' thegovernment thinks it's people are....just let one 'dirty bomb' go off and it will be chaos! Plain and simple.
Not to mention........ that is what our emergency services are trained for. And the National Guard. And this new malitia that the government is setting in place including Homeland security. Just another waste of taxpayer's dollars! |

Emergency services cannot keep order for an emergency of that magnatude......everyone must be ready and calm.....not that a book would cover all |

Anybody get this yet? I'm wondering if there's a page that says "Your county spends too much money on pet projects and patronage positions." And if there is...can you tell the rest of us what the answer is to this??? |
