CAPITOL
Senate speculation rampant
Who will fill Clinton seat hot topic for pundits

BY MICHAEL GORMLEY The Associated Press

For New Yorkers who love a political drama, pull up a chair.
The decision on who will fill the U.S. Senate seat expected to be vacated by Hillary Rodham Clinton, nominated to be secretary of state, will get a long run in New York.
And the stars are aligned for a global audience like never before: Next-generation Democratic luminaries like Andrew Cuomo and Caroline Kennedy lead a growing pack of more than a half-dozen hopefuls for the seat. Subplots include Andrew Cuomo’s sticky divorce five years ago from a cousin of Caroline’s, which split the Cuomo-Kennedy Democratic dream team.
At the center of it all is Democratic Gov. David Paterson. After eight months on the job, he is faced with the sole vote on who the winner will be, along with some other little chores including fighting off a state fiscal crisis and trying to help Democrats secure the fragile Senate majority they won in November despite dissidents threatening to go Republican.
“The truth of the matter is the seat does not become available for at least six weeks,” said Steven Greenberg of the Siena College poll.
“So while it’s fun for reporters and for political spectators like myself to watch and conjecture and guess and look at every machination, my guess is the governor is far more focused on his budget that comes out next week and who will actually show up when he calls a legislative leaders’ meeting,” Greenberg said.
Yet bloggers and political writers are already tapping away at a breathless pace.
“Cuomo is by far the better choice,” stated Wednesday’s editorial in The Buffalo News in an unusual endorsement of a candidate for which there is no traditional campaign. “A Senate seat should go to someone who has earned it in his or her own right ... that description best fits Cuomo.”
“With a constellation of talent to choose from in New York, the last thing the citizens of the Empire State need is for [Paterson] ... to appoint a member of the Kennedy clan because her name, by virtue of...................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....amp;EntityId=Ar01401

‘What am I bid for one U.S. Senate seat?’

Is Hillary's seat for sale?
The selling of political favors is a long-held tradition in the Legislature. It is a black market sort of thing, only benefiting the individual members.
Perhaps putting this on top of the table. We could tax it. Our governor could put Hillary's seat out for open bid. The resulting bidding war between the teachers unions, environmental groups, the health industry and the Kennedy clan might just cover the state's financial crisis.

Caroline Kennedy declares interest in Senate seat
Daughter of JFK reportedly willing to enter spotlight

By IRENE JAY LIU, Capitol bureau
Last updated: 2:50 p.m., Monday, December 15, 2008

The New York Times is reporting that Caroline Kennedy, daughter of John F. Kennedy, has decided to ask Gov. David Paterson to be appointed to fill the vacancy left by Sen. Hillary Clinton, who is expected to become Secretary of State.

At a brief press conference at the Capitol following the vote by the state's electoral college, Paterson said that he had not heard directly from Kennedy about her decision to actively seek the nomination. Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, another name on the list of possible replacements for Clinton, was in Albany to serve as one of the state's electors.

According to the Times, Kennedy has.....................http://timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyID=750713

Ya, but she has the   'name'. I guess that's all you need to be qualified.

In this dysfunctional state I guess a name is all we've had for some time now and not one elected senator has ever done a thing for upstate NY.

What is Greenburg talking about? If the Gov had any smarts, which he doesn't, he would pick now and give the newbie more seniority. There is no reason to wait 6 weeks.

The truth is that we haven't had a Senator for 2 years. Kennedy is a complete zero, an empty dress. Andrew Cuomo is the only logical Krat and he doesn't want it. The best choice? Alan Keyes-so what if he doesn't live here-neither did Hillary.

Among Democrats, I would support Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, State Comptroller Thomas Dinapoli, or Governor Paterson for the seat.  All have exhibited a degree of fiscal accountability.

Caroline Kennedy has no relevant experience.  Appointing her to fill the seat continues the control
and power by the privileged few - Clinton, Bush, Kennedy, etc.

MT,

I was preparing to retract my statement re: Paterson when I read your post.  I heard on the news this morning his proposal to implement an "obesity tax".  Another social engineering tax (a.k.a., sin tax).  I don't support tax increases of any kind to address budget deficits.  Taxes must be reduced to put more money in the peoples' pockets.  The consumer, not the government, will lead us out of this recession.  Additional taxes will prolong the economic hard times.

In a separate article, I read that Paterson is looking to trim the state workforce by 3,000.  He has challenged the state employees union to agree to "givebacks" to avoid the layoffs.  Our state goverment is bloated from the Legislative Office Building to the ranks of the union employees.  Non-essential services should be eliminated and the people who are employed in the affected departments should either be reassigned to departments that provide
essential services or their government service should be severed.
