Town employees get an incentive to retire

Rotterdam officials have agreed to offer town employees an incentive to retire early as a method to reduce the tax impact of the 2009 budget.
Members of the Town Board adopted a pair of resolutions Wednesday that will allow employees to retire without giving the requisite one year’s notice. Supervisor Steve Tommasone said entering into a memorandum of agreement with the Civil Service Employees Association will allow the town to offer early retirement to about two dozen workers.
Tommasone said the hope is to reduce the number of town employees by attrition. He said the deadline for eligible workers to apply for the program is Oct. 31.
Board members will then review the impact of keeping these positions vacant. Tommasone said the hope is to further reduce spending increases called for in the tentative budget before the board votes to adopt it in mid-November.
The tentative budget includes an estimated double-digit percentage increase in Rotterdam’s tax levy. The increase is largely blamed on a roughly $400,000 reduction in revenue from interest earnings, mortgage and sales tax receipts.
Tommasone said Wednesday that further review of these fi gures has already reduced the initially anticipated tax impact. The board will discuss the budget again during its agenda meeting Oct. 30.

I thought she had already announced her intention to retire.  Also, I would find it odd that a person who is elected to a position should be getting any type of retirement package.  Shouldn't it, instead, be understood that you are under contract with whatever benefits are there, not necessarily an employee who should get this type of package?
