Uh, does anyone know the state is in a major financial crisis???????????? The state doesn't have enough money for absolute necessities and this story mentions spending state money on this boat?
Bring the Onrust to Rotterdam .. we will find a home for it in the new park to be built along the Mohawk in Rotterdam Jct.
YOu want it, YOU pay for it out of YOUR OWN POCKET.
Oh yeah, that's right, you don't have a job

Th Onrust would make a great addition to Bicentennial Park which will be located adjacent to the Mabee Farm and Franchere Historical Center. We are planning to include dockage for travelers on the State Barge Canal to moor while visiting Rotterdam Jct. It would be relatively simple to add additional space for the Onrust to dock.

The Onrust should be docked at Gateway Landing, it is the original "harbor" I do believe, visibility is better and it's a mere five minute walk into the Stockade.
There is already a dock there in addition to a boat launch for residents use. Access to the river already exists. The money could be spent to improve that little park. Add police patrols and it will attract people. There is also a bird sanctuary adjacent and some parking.
No one uses it now except for drunks partying and lighting fires and when I called the Sheriff office about this they were not at all concerned that law abiding people were uncomfortable frequenting the park. Chase 'em out!

Oh, and DV, the park is technically in Rotterdam!
If the city doesn't want the Onrust, then there is nothing wrong with letting folks know that Rotterdam is interested in it.
I know that Gateway Park is in Rotterdam .. so are the islands in the river and most of the Western Gateway Bridge .. and the ball fields and most of the parking lot at SCCC.
Technically that is a fishing pier and not really a boat dock at Gateway Park.

Many people think this would be the ideal location also. I wonder how often the people who frequent the dss building will appreciate it? Probably the same as they appreciate proctors.

No, it is a dock, sometimes people even use it.

I think you are referring to Kiwanis Park -- Gateway Park is the one by the Western Gateway Bridge --- that dock is clearly for fishing and not big enough for the Onrust.

No, that is for Gateway Landing. Kiwanis has potable water and bathroom facilities.
The Gateway dock could be improved for the Onrust. The Historical Society has a dock in the vicinity as well.
Apparently, the city does not want the Onrust ... and I believe it would be better if it were placed closer to the Mabee Farm. BUT ---- as long as it finds a home in Schenectady County ---- I will support whatever plan is put together.

You always claim to be an optimist. How about for once being a realist.
The fed govt deficit not only hit the trillion dollar mark within the past two years, but it has multiplied by 28 times since Bush left office, It's $14 trillion! That's $45,000 for each and every person (including newborns) in the U.S.!
The state govt has, what, $12 billion deficit.
The govt school districts are in debt but do absolutely nothing to address that except raise taxes.
The county and city has raised taxes. Your Susie seems to keep the county financial situation a secret until people see the truth when they get their tax bills with the increases. Only days into the new year (with a higher tax bill), city residents will be facing a double digit tax increase next year.
Susie, Metroplex, and those pensions for the teachers, fire, and police are all draining the taxpayers dry.
No one is moving into Schenectady city. People who live here are looking to move out of the city but can't find buyers for their homes.
And YOU DV want tax dollars spent on a stupid boat! "oh, it's a state grant" DUH, It's still THE TAXPAYERS MONEY !!!!! (Of course, without a job paying taxes, and no house, you wouldn't know).
There is no government money available. Any government money spent on this stuff is money taken away from necessities.
Government must CUT SPENDING.
DV, why don't YOU pay for this out of our own pocket.
Let the private sector pay for this if any entity in the private sector would be willing. Oh, and NO TAX DEDUCTIONS for the private sector for paying for it

Federal and state grants are funded annually through the appropriations process. Once the money is appropriated, it WILL be spent by whomever files for and wins the grant. For too many years, short-sighted Republicans in this area have refused to apply for the numerous federal, state and, yes, PRIVATE grants available.
The Rotterdam Parks and Recreation Commission will apply for EVERY grant that we can to build Bicentennial Park and to build a new, multi-generational Community Center in Rotterdam -- and to improve all of the existing parks in the town as well. We will shake every tree and look under every rock and bring to this town EVERY dollar of federal, state and private grants that we can to implement the Vision 2020 Town Parks and Recreation Plan. By doing this, we can improve the quality of life in the town without adding to the property tax rate.
Finally -- I extend the invitation to the folks on the Onrust project --- if you need a home for the boat -- Rotterdam is interested. If the city or Scotia comes up with a better plan, we still offer our commitment to help the project get done. Keeping the Onrust in Schenectady County is our #1 priority -- whatever we can do to help accomplish that goal .. just let us know.

MC1- I agree with you but it seems that the system is hell bent on spending this money. I think it is a good thing but just not the right time. However, that doesn't seem to matter to the powers that be.
Anyway, I'd love to see the Onrust at Gateway Landing. If we can just clean that park up. I wonder how receptive the RPD would be if I called them to clear out the drunks when I would like to walk over and use the park. It's against the law to bring alcohol into parks isn't it? Would they care?

Most federal grants (like the one for the dock and the Onrust) requires the City/municipality/etc to PAY HALF! Also, the Erie Boulevard $14 million dollar fiasco requires the City to place funds in as well.
Apply for grants, but don't think that they are 'free' in any way, shape or form - the taxpayers will be paying for half of many projects. With a likely a tax increase to boot.
Also, these projects bring little, if anything in return to the taxpayers. There is nothing coming into the City with a dock to a free floating museum? Now if the museum charged admission and funds went to the City, well then there is some merit. Most of these grants are being applied for but the City needs to bring money INTO the City as a result. Not just another free park.
