An Albany man has been arrested on charges of picking up women in Schenectady and holding them against their will in Rotterdam and attempting to rape one of them, police said Thursday. Joseph H. Kruppenbacher, 62, of 15 Besch Ave., Albany, was charged with three counts of first-degree false imprisonment and one count of first-degree attempted rape, felonies. Kruppenbacher is accused of picking up three women in Schenectady since January, taking each to Rotterdam and refusing to let them leave his vehicle, police department spokesman Lt. Jason Murphy said. “At some point, they decided they didn’t want to remain with him and he made it apparent that he would not let them go,” Murphy said. The first report of an incident came on Jan. 13. A woman said she was picked up and taken to Duanesburg Road. She ultimately jumped out of the moving vehicle, suffering scrapes in the process. The second report was Feb. 5, when another woman described a similar incident. This time, however, she escaped when the vehicle was stopped. She fl ed in the area of Altamont Avenue. The last incident was reported Tuesday, on Becker Drive. In that incident, the woman reported she was tied up and that Kruppenbacher attempted to rape her. She, too, however, was able to escape, Murphy said. Murphy declined to say how police narrowed their search to Kruppenbacher or what information the third woman was able to provide that led them to Kruppenbacher. Murphy also declined to say how police believe Kruppenbacher may have chosen the women. He said, however, police do not believe there are other victims. Kruppenbacher was arrested Wednesday on Madison Avenue in Albany. He was arraigned in Rotterdam Town Court and ordered held at the Schenectady County Jail. Kruppenbacher is listed on several Web sites as a member of an Albany-area chess club. A phone number connected to his listing is also connected to the address police gave for him. In 2006, he was quoted in a Daily Gazette article attempting to get chess boards placed in parks around the region. A woman answering the phone at the number listed for him Thursday afternoon said she was aware of some of the accusations, but declined to comment further.
First I thought the same thing. What where they thinking when they got in the car with this lunatic. Also, I don't know if I understand....did the cops know who the guy was after the first complaint was made? Or did it take THREE times before they figured out who it was and arrested him? On the news last night, they gave the impression that they knew who this guy was right from the get go. But the gazette doesn't quite say the same thing.

Man accused of kidnapping women faces new charges Friday, June 27, 2008 By Steven Cook (Contact) Gazette Reporter
SCHENECTADY — An Albany man accused of kidnapping three women earlier this year now faces additional charges of attempted murder and rape.
Joseph Kruppenbacher, 62, of 15 Besch Ave., was indicted today on two counts of second-degree attempted murder and one count of first-degree rape. He also faces a host of other charges, including unlawful imprisonment, assault and attempted assault.
In one case, Kruppenbacher is accused of kidnapping a woman Jan. 13 on Route 7 in Rotterdam and then attempting to kill her by driving at a high speed toward a remote destination, all while displaying a knife and threatening to kill her, according to the indictment.
Kruppenbacher is also accused of kidnapping another woman Feb. 5 from the Price Chopper parking lot on Altamont Avenue and trying to kill her by displaying a knife, choking her and threatening to kill her. He also allegedly drove his vehicle at high speed directly at her. The woman avoided injury by jumping over a guard rail at the last instant, according to the indictment.
He was also indicted on one count of first-degree rape and predatory sexual assault, accused of raping a woman in January in a sand and gravel pit on Becker Drive off Route 7.
Kruppenbacher was arrested last month, accused of picking up three women in Schenectady since January, taking each to Rotterdam and refusing to let them leave his vehicle, police said.
The women were allegedly held Jan. 13, Feb. 5 and April 29. One woman said she fled by jumping out of his moving vehicle. Another said she fled when the car was stopped. In the final incident, the woman reported she was tied up and that Kruppenbacher attempted to rape her.
At a bail hearing last month, Kruppenbacher's attorney, Terence Kindlon, accused the alleged victims of being prostitutes, saying later that he believes that brings with it credibility issues. He also speculated an attempted rape count may have arisen over a contract dispute. Kindlon also said one of the alleged victims tried to steal $43 from Kruppenbacher.
With his wife in attendance, Kruppenbacher was ordered held on $100,000 bail, an amount Kindlon called grossly excessive. Kindlon argued that Kruppenbacher is a Vietnam veteran with no criminal history who owns property in Albany and is a top-level chess player. He is not a flight risk, Kindlon said.
SCHENECTADY Attempted murder, rape charged Police say man held women against their will BY STEVEN COOK Gazette Reporter
An Albany man accused earlier this year of kidnapping three women now faces charges of attempted murder and rape, authorities said. Joseph Kruppenbacher, 62, of 15 Besch Ave., was indicted by a Schenectady County grand jury on Friday on two counts of seconddegree attempted murder and one count of first-degree rape. He also faces a host of other counts of unlawful imprisonment, assault and attempted assault. In one case, Kruppenbacher is accused of kidnapping a woman Jan. 13 on Route 7 in Rotterdam and then attempting to kill her by driving at high speed toward a remote destination, displaying a knife and threatening her, according to the indictment reported Friday morning. Kruppenbacher is also accused of kidnapping another woman Feb. 5 in the vicinity of the Price Chopper parking lot on Altamont Avenue. He is accused of displaying a knife, choking her and threatening to kill her. He also allegedly drove his vehicle at high speed directly at her. The woman avoided injury by jumping over a guard rail at the last instant. The women, Schenectady County District Attorney Robert Carney said, willingly went with Kruppenbacher. “But, as soon as he wanted them to do things that they weren’t comfortable with, or at all resisted him or disagreed with him, he would turn violent,” Carney said, “to the point where one was so scared that she bailed out of his car when it was moving at high speed.” Kruppenbacher’s attorney, Terence Kindlon, has said the women were prostitutes, an assessment Carney has not disputed. Kindlon said Friday he had yet to see the indictment and couldn’t comment. The indictment covers alleged incidents involving five women, Carney said. Two came forward after Kruppenbacher’s arrest. The indictment, Carney said, outlines a series of similar attacks. “Certainly the pattern was preying on women that were less likely to tell,” Carney said, “but they did.” Kruppenbacher was also indicted on one count of first-degree rape and predatory sexual assault, accused of raping a woman in January in a sand and gravel pit at Becker Drive off Route 7. Kruppenbacher was arrested April 30, accused then of picking up three women in Schenectady since January, taking each to Rotterdam and refusing to let them leave his vehicle, police said. The women were allegedly held Jan. 13, Feb. 5 and April 29. One woman said she fled by jumping out of his moving vehicle. Another said she fl ed when the car was stopped. At a bail hearing last month, Kindlon accused the alleged victims of being prostitutes, saying later that he believes that brings with it credibility issues. He also speculated an attempted rape count might have grown out of a contract dispute. Kindlon called the bail amount then grossly excessive. He argued that Kruppenbacher is a 62-year-old Vietnam veteran with no criminal history. He owns property in Albany and is a toplevel chess player. He is not a flight risk, Kindlon said. Kruppenbacher’s wife attended the hearing. Kindlon also alleged that one of the women tried to steal $43 from Kruppenbacher‘s pocket. He was ordered held then on $100,000 bail. Kruppenbacher has since posted bail and was released pending further proceedings.
