McLane withdrew their option on the food distribution warehouse project. Congratulations to the western chapter of saverotterdam.org . . . a job well done!
YIPPIE!!!!! Rotterdam and Schalmont lost hundreds of thousands of tax revenue! Horray! Those people in Eldorado and Country Walk will be the first ones to b**ch when their property taxes skyrocket. I don't wanna hear it!

Congratulations to the western chapter of saverotterdam.org . . . a job well done!
What are they saving Rotterdam from?? A larger tax base. Way to go!!
I have to agree. I also feel that McLanes is a stable, secure, good paying business. One Rotterdam should have been proud to welcome. McLanes bent over backwards to meet the demands of Rotterdam.
The main complaint from the residents of County Walk and Eldorado was the sewer issue. And understandably so. But that would have been short lived. Sewers are inevitable as Rt 7 develops.
And mobil, you are correct. McLanes was developing on 'their own' without the help of our tax dollars through Metroplex.

I don't know many of the details, but as a resident of Duanesburg, I would welcome them to consider establishing operations in my town. The area near the I-88 exit (24) is a prime site for development. Of course, we have the same issue with a lack of sewers.
The main complaint from the residents of County Walk and Eldorado was the sewer issue.
I'm sorry, on that subject I have little pity for those people. They bought their houses knowing there were no sewers - and they KNEW they were buying land/houses next to an as of yet undeveloped "farm" / vacant property, just off a major interstate intersection, with nearby warehouses. THEY chose to lbuy the property and ive in the houses.
This is a lot like those residents off I-890 who bought property KNOWING that 890 was in their backyard, then complained 10 yrs later about noise and garbage, and then wanted the TOWN (and taxpayers) to do something about it. HELLLLLO! Wake up people.
Sorry if I offended anyone - but if you can afford to live in $300-500,000 houses in Eldorado and Country Walk - you SHOULD have the common sense to know that the land right outside your prized development would someday (soon) be developed - and likely for warehouse/trucking/etc.
Yes houses where built and bought next to vacant land. Its pretty unreasonable to think that the people who live in that neighborhood should expect a 24x7 operation or industrial business to be built right next door. Expected would be that Rotterdam would know better to approve all the building permits for new housing and then place business like that right next door (and by the way change the zoning AFTER the houses were built). The neighborhood came first. People did not move right next door to industrial business and then start to complain. The other comparsions made here, like moving right next to a warehouse or highway then complaining of the noise is not a valid comparison. You are right, should you move next to a highway you should expect noise, it is a known and EXISTING entity. What should be expected from the residents of Country Walk? is that what be built around the area stay consistent with what has already been built. You don't build neighborhoods and then stick 24x7 industrial business right next door. POOR planning. As much as business is needed in Rotterdam is a planned community. Who the heck would want to live here with that kind of design. Your tax dollars may be beneficial for the moment, but in the end you are ruining the town by poor planning and not creating a place for people to live and work as well. I have said it before you need residents and business, its not just ALL about business. They will need to find a way to make both co-existent. Having a new mid middle class neighborhood attracts people to move and live in this town. Some of you sound mad that people actually have nice new homes. I don't think it is unreasonable for people who build and/or buy in LARGE neighborhood development expect that they be protected from certain types of commercial building. I personal think it makes sense to have those expectations that the land be developed consistently with how the design started. Exit 24 on i-88 in Duanesburg sounds like the perfect location, I have thought that all along. It is sparse enough out there that you can develop an area that is not in someone's back yard. Lots of someones back yards. anyways my 2cents....for those that care to read. Thanks and have a nice day!
Ok, I'll give you that the zoning has changed SINCE you moved in, you've made some good points.
BUT, there's a warehouse on the other side of the exit ramp - behind the Citgo station, that's been there for years - surely you realized that was an industrial area - which could/would expand, right?
And they knew there were no sewers, so why is there an expectation now that the town will provide?
OK, I almost reacted to this...then I thought. We usually have some sort of PROOF before we react to these things. I almost posted a blog on this, however, first I would like to know the following. Avon, what is the source of this information? I checked http://www.Rotterdamny.org. I checked http://cms.dailygazette.com. I checked http://www.timesunion.com.
Also, Admin is rather quick with getting things up that have this type of significance to the town / county. So, I ask again, what is the source of this rumor?

Plans for Rotterdam food warehouse scrapped Friday, April 25, 2008 By Justin Mason (Contact) Gazette Reporter
ROTTERDAM — McLane Food Service Inc. has scrapped plans to build a distribution center proposed for 27 acres straddling the towns of Rotterdam and Princetown, citing overall project delays and the recent economic downturn. Members of the Princetown Planning Board were expected to address the project's site plan, special use permit and subdivision applications Thursday, when they received notification the company had cancelled its plans. Planning board Chairwoman Patricia Bishop said the notification came through project engineer Joe Bianchine of ABD Engineers after the town requested McLane address several concerns raised by area residents. "They just said that at this time they were canceling the project," she said today. "We were all surprised. McLane's had proposed moving their distribution center in Guilderland to a 168,000-square foot facility on a former gravel pit off Feuz Road. Bart McKay, a spokesman for McLane, said the project faced delays on several levels that made building a new distribution center unfeasible. "The added cost associated with enduring these delays was not one we wanted to bear," he said. McKay said the company hasn't decided whether it will move the project to another location or if it will be abandoned altogether. He said the need for additional space forecasted when the project was proposed in 2005 didn't seem as imminent given recent economic trends. "Certainly for the time being, we'll stay where we are," he said.
Thank you and it is a pity that this went by the wayside.
I just wish we got this done when there was a chance. You know, this means that since the first apple has fallen from the tree, that others will probably start to come anytime now.
We need to add to the tax base in Rotterdam and across Schenectady County and this was a perfect chance. I'm sorry that the people of Eldorado are ecstatic about this happening, but weren't they also just complaining that their taxes shot through the roof at the time of the re-evaluation?
I would think that ANYONE that is moving into Eldorado at any time would realize how close this property is to the I-88 / I-90 exit. In fact, it could be one good reason that someone decides that it's a good place to move to. It's just this is something that you have to expect if you're going to live near a highway. There's going to be development and traffic, no matter what.
I just hope people get used to the fact that either something needs to go in to help the tax base or that their taxes are going to continue to soar.
A job well done??? Or a job done, not well thought through?
The neighborhood came first. People did not move right next door to industrial business and then start to complain.
If I recall, when Eldorado was built, they knew well in advance that there was an existing gun club adjacent to their development before they moved in. They initially said they had no problem with that. After some folks moved in they complained about the noise from the gun club. Which in turn forced the gun club to put up a noise barrier wall. Is this true? There has been poor planning in this town for decades. There is so little land left to be developed that no matter what is proposed, people are being effected and clearly not happy. It's happening everywhere in Rotterdam.
And yes Rt7 and exit 24 should be developed. And if all of the residents in this town do not want to go through what the effects of McLanes or a Walmart can bring....every single resident of this town should be at every town board meeting screaming SEWERS! Let the developers focus on areas that already have the infrastructure in place. Then perhaps they will leave the residential areas alone. But how many of you are willing to have the town take out a bond to place sewers in those areas that will clearly raise our taxes? We all should cause that will be the only way to secure your nice little residential neighborhoods.
Cause you can bet that there will be many more developments wanting to move in. Let's suck it up and pay the taxes and give them a place to land. It's our choice.
And lastly, I am honestly sorry to hear that this fell through. McLanes was probably one of the better businesses to grace this town. I certainly hope they do find another place in Rotterdam. We need businesses and the tax base.
And when Flying J's comes in...you folks who live in Country Walk/Eldorado better keep your kids inside, cause there will be transits EVERYWHERE!!! And let's not forget Schalmont school as well. Be careful what you wish for........

With the successes of saverotterdam.org maybe we can detour any future business's setting up in Rotterdam. Remember word gets around..... First it was Walmart, now McLanes. Saverottterdam.org soon won't have a reason to exist, business's will all together stop inquiring about doing here with the residents attitude towards business development.
Good job Rotterdam! Specifically saverotterdam.org!
