BUS RIDE
    Elsewhere in the world of giveaways, I see that the Quebec bus manufacturer Nova Bus is going to get a $1.3 million state grant, and possibly another one for $1.65 million, to build a factory in Plattsburgh, the justification being the usual one of jobs, jobs, jobs.
    Plus the further justification of allowing the company to meet “Buy America” standards so it can sell to entities that receive federal money.
    Very nice, except that Nova Bus closed a similar factory in Niskayuna six years ago, eliminating some 110 jobs, after receiving similar favorable treatment from the state in the form of “Empire Zone” designation, qualifying it for a range of tax breaks.
    So it’s a nice little merry-goaround, this economic development game, and I only wish I could get on it myself.
