CVS is paying about $700,000 for American Legion Post 1005 at Altamont and Chrisler avenues. This deal has been in the works for several years, but is expected to close within weeks.
Legion membership collapsed from about 700 to 150 in recent times. CVS will demolish the existing Post 1005 and build a new store.
By fall, CVS will consolidate the stores in the Hannaford Plaza in Rotterdam and on Hamburg Street at the new location

Well, there goes 2 businesses out of the town. 2 more buildings to fill up. Wonder why they're moving to a higher tax district? Because there's no major traffic on Hamburg Street, as well as minimal in the Hannaford / Wal-Mart plaza.
How will we now backfill 2 more stores? |

Well figure. In the shopping plaza there are three pharmacies: CVS, Hannaford, and Walmart. Then directly across the street is Rite Aid. And down the road just a wee big is Price Chopper which has a pharmacy, and across from that will soon open a Walgreens.
Have we got a problem here? Six pharmacies within walking distance of each other?
Having brought this up, I'm acutally suprised that CVS is moving to Chrisler. They could have bought the old Grand Union and had a good size CVS there. I can't imagine the Chrisler Ave location being that big, I mean where is all the parking there? |

Just wait until Walgreens opens. Competition will grow fiercer and the prices will go even lower. A break for us, I guess! |

Razing is closer
On occasion here, there was mention about upcoming demolition of landmark American Legion Post 1005 to make way for a new CVS Pharmacy at busy Altamont and Chrisler. This project has been in the works for three years. Last week, temporary fencing was erected around the property and two adjacent vehicle sales and service buildings also to be razed. The building, constructed in 1950, for many years was a popular place for wedding receptions and other social events. A membership decline from 900 to 170 or so caused fiscal problems and led to the decision to sell. CVS will close two Rotterdam stores and consolidate operations at the Schenectady site in the fall.

Long-awaited opening Marv Cermak
A brand-spanking-new CVS Pharmacy in Schenectady has been displaying an "opening soon'' sign since summer. Well, guess what? Soon will finally arrive on Sunday, Jan. 31. Generally, a new drugstore isn't very newsworthy because the pharmacy/mini-mart combos are popping up all over the place. But this shop at the busy intersection of Altamont and Chrisler has an unusual twist.
Originally, the grand opening at the newly constructed building was trumpeted for January 2009. Unfortunately, somebody didn't read the lease fine print locking in a CVS at the nearby Hannaford Plaza until mid-2010.
CVS and Walgreen's both were trying to grab the Altamont/Chrisler corner starting way back in late 2004. CVS won out, paying $500,000 for the landmark American Legion Post 1005 property and shelling out more bucks for two adjacent businesses.
Mike DeAngelis at CVS in Rhode Island says glitches happen when you operate 7,000 pharmacies. So, the new game plan calls for CVS to close another of its pharmacies on nearby Hamburg Street on Jan. 30, the day before the new place opens.
And the Hannaford Plaza CVS will also move operations to the new plant, but not until mid-2010.

Funny how the TU reported a year ago that cvs paid the american legion $700k for their property and in this article it says $500K. |
